It's "That Guy… Who Was in That Thing" meets "The Nerdist Podcast" but with people even less well known! Sure it's fun to interview the crazy famous and ask them about the difficult years, but that's been done and they won't return our calls. Memories are plastic - we're getting the real dirt from people still crawling through it. Laura Force Scruggs is the playwright and Jake Scruggs is the techn... more

I've been a guest on this podcast a couple of times, and it's always a really great time! The questions are insightful, there is a lot of empathy for modern artists, and the conversation always goes to VERY interesting places....
Jake and Laura care so much about these artists, and it’s evident in their thoughtful and well-researched questions! Keep going, you’re great!
Great to hear stories about local talent
A fun podcast by people who really care about Chicago theatre!
Great podcast highlighting the locally known or new artist. Fun and informative and kind of addicting. Thanks!
Laura, Jake and Bryn interviewed me back in 2015, and managed to cover lots of territory in about 90 minutes. Given that I get the question of "how I manage to do what it is that I do" on almost a monthly basis, I enjoy the luxury of sending folks back to listen to this podcast. If they can't be bothered to listen, then I know that they just want easy answers to a career-long challenge. If they listen and still want more input, I know they're in it for the long haul. (Either way, you've saved me... more
From its humble beginnings documenting Bryn Packard’s hopefully meteoric rise to fame, this podcast has grown into something entirely different and wonderful. Jake and Laura interview visual and performing artists from all over the fame spectrum. Laura provides stellar intros that contextualize (and often flatter) the guest, while Jake keeps the conversation moving along at a good clip with insight and humor. If I only subscribed to one podcast, this would be it!
(The episode with David 'The... more
There are plenty of podcasts interviewing famous people, and relatively few famous people. There are a lot more artists with a certain level of success still trying to work out a basic living in the arts, and this podcast focuses on their stories. Laura's enthusiasm and Jake's analytical approach complement each other perfectly and make for a highly entertaining listen.
Excellent podcast. While Jake and Laura may have had not-famous artists on in the past, I would say it's shifted to more "local" artists -- artists who are skilled, who know their stuff, and are a delight to talk to, but aren't on the "world stage" yet, as it were. Perfect mix of expertise and a certain sort of rawness, or realness, or weirdness (or all of the above, in turns or at once), that hasn't been overprocessed and overmarketed, etc.
It's clear that Jake and Laura do their research, but... more
A gem. One of the better podcasts around. Lots of fun.
As I said before, I have listened to all of these podcasts, this is one of the very best the crew has done. Really enjoyed the insightful comments made by the guest, Valarie Hager.
I always look forward to each week's installment. Consistently improving, this podcast has reached a high level as it looks into the life of a New York actor trying to make it. Always funny and always inspiring.
Great podcast tracking the ups and downs of being a working actor in NYC. Pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to succeed.
Listen as a man pits himself against impossible odds to become a working actor who can support himself. It's the American Dream vs. the reality of New York City.
The failures are as entertaining as the successes.
