  • I'm skeptical and interested but concerned about the lack of acknowledgement that we live in a world limited by climate realities.

  • Pipeline to west coast

Excellent podcast, I listen regularly and it’s very informative.

One request: The host said there would be a significant benefit to Canadians if pipeline capacity to the West Coast was increased, but he didn’t quantify or say what that benefit is. Please tell us what the benefit is, and explain it. Please mention this regularly to improve everyone’s understanding.

  • Iran War, Oil Prices, and Canada Implicatons

I have listened to ARC Energy Ideas for many years and have appreciated the thoughtful discussions about Canada’s energy sector. Lately, though, I find it harder to listen. It just makes me really sad.

In recent episodes there seems to be a great deal of optimism about the future of Canadian oil and gas production, but much less discussion about emissions and climate change. Earlier in the podcast’s history there were more conversations about ESG, renewables, and the broader energy transition. ... more

  • In the pocket of Big Oil

Biased out of the gate, and builds its own echo chamber by speculating and cherry picking data. Weak “scholarship”, but the worst part of this is How Boring they are. If you like listening to biased, bland, ill informed “hosts” who sound slow even at 1.5x, then this podcast is for you…if you can stay awake.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Shell, LNG Momentum, and Nova Scotia’s Energy Ambitions
Q: How will the Wind West project be advanced, and what are the main hurdles to achieving phase one development?
The Premier outlines the need for transmission, generation capacity, and customer demand, noting that initial phases could be 3,000–5,000 MW with a broader 40–60 GW potential long-term, and stresses the importance of pre-planning and inter-provincial cooperation to secure approvals and investment.
Shell, LNG Momentum, and Nova Scotia’s Energy Ambitions
Q: Tell us why you pursued energy as Premier and what you see as the biggest opportunities for Nova Scotia.
Tim Houston explains that energy opportunities—onshore and offshore gas, offshore wind, and related infrastructure—offer a path to grow the economy, create local jobs, and put Nova Scotia back in the national energy discussion, while emphasizing safety, sustainability, and regulatory reforms.
Rory Johnston on the Sanguine Strait Stoppage
Q: How might infrastructure and policy shape the response to Hormuz-related supply disruptions?
The discussion highlights that strategic pipelines (e.g., Saudi East-West, Enbridge Main Line, Bridger expansion) provide crucial optionality and resilience, while policy tools like export restrictions or tolls could either alleviate or worsen price spikes depending on timing and scope. Rory emphasizes that private markets alone cannot supply the strategic flexibility needed in a crisis, suggesting a continuing role for government or crown involvement to ensure energy security and diversified routes for crude and refined products.
Rory Johnston on the Sanguine Strait Stoppage
Q: What does Rory think about the UAE's departure from OPEC and its implications for the oil market?
Rory views the UAE exit as a major fracture within OPEC, signaling a shift that could lead to less cohesion among members and greater geopolitical risk in determining production and pricing. He notes that this move enhances Emirati production ambitions and complicates the bloc's ability to present a unified front, with potentially long-lasting effects on market dynamics and investment in the region.
Stewart Muir on B.C. Energy: DRIPA, Pipelines, LNG & Power
Q: What is the risk of royalty changes for BC's energy investment climate?
Raising royalties could dampen investment by increasing the break-even cost for upstream projects, potentially driving developers to explore in Alberta or other jurisdictions, and could slow the pace of new LNG terminals if long-term value creation is uncertain.
