  • Great podcast

I really enjoyed the episodes so far, especially hearing from experts in their fields bringing their own perspectives. I must say it’s hard to listen to the interviews sometimes as Dr. Angela Puca asks good questions but her responses to the interviewee’s answers seem mostly unenthusiastic or uninvolved, saying “huh” or “that’s interesting” flatly instead of offering back a reframe or reflection, and you can hear tell awkward it is for the guests. The introductions and wrap up could also use mor... more

  • Love love love

This work is a bridge between worlds that needs more explorers like Dr. Puca. “The serious work. The long term, patient and cautious investigation,” of Dr. Sagan echoes her scholarly, systematic approach that few possess but all need in their practice. Huzzah!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

British Traditional Wicca with Rufus Harrington
Q: So I was wondering, how do you feel about academics being antagonistic to Wicca and the idea of foundational myths as history?
I think there are two angles: academia has historically faced backlash, but it also provides a solid foundation that helps practitioners understand roots; the key is balancing respect for tradition with openness to new evidence and interpretations.
Destination: The Truth about Solomonic Magic with Dr Gal Sofer
Q: Is Solomonic Magic a real, coherent category or a problematic label?
It's not a stable, well-defined category; it's better seen as an open network of textual units that may or may not be linked to Solomon. The term should be used cautiously and with clarifications about which texts are included and why.
Destination: The Truth about Solomonic Magic with Dr Gal Sofer
Q: What should someone start with if they want to analyze manuscripts using your method?
Do a close first reading, then a second with awareness that scribes reused ideas; identify concrete formulas (genes) by looking for repeated phrases across manuscripts, then map how these units connect. Compare across manuscripts to see how practitioners and writers thought about the text.
Magic in the United States with Heather J. Freeman
Q: How did the podcast take shape, and how were topics chosen?
The project emerged from an NEH grant, with PRX as producer; after initial setbacks, Freeman revisited the grant, pitched again, and refined the concept to cover a broader range of American magical practices and their historical contexts, incorporating expert advisors and community voices.
Magic in the United States with Heather J. Freeman
Q: Tell us a little about you and your origin story in esotericism.
Freeman describes her transition from rational, secular materialism to an engagement with magical and esoteric practices, sparked by encounters with practitioners and an awareness of a broad spectrum of beliefs beyond her earlier assumptions.
