  • Episode 303

Great stories and told with enthusiasm. However, I started listening to this podcast because every other podcast talks about their opinion in today's politics. halfway through episode 303, I get the speaker’s opinion on today’s politics. I don’t want more of the same. I will keep looking.

  • Good content but

There’s a lot that’s good with this podcast. They provide good research into their episodes but the bad jokes and constant giggling can be a bit much. I wish they cut that out and just give us their great content

  • Fascinating discussion s

I appreciate their ability to hold a discussion which simultaneously acknowledges their own biases while evaluating the points of view of others. They are impressive in their willingness to examine all sides and work through the complexity of each topic.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How an Empire Ends: Gothic Paganism
Q: So how are we going to make a whole episode out of that, Jenny?
We'll try to triangulate here and create a general picture of Gothic paganism.
Rebel Daughters of the Roman Empire (With Tana Rebellis)
Q: What rules did Augustus put in place that resulted in the rebellion of his female family members?
Augustus enforced sumptuary laws on women, requiring them to marry, have children, and adhere to strict public behaviors, contrasting with the wild behaviors of his daughters and granddaughters.
Rebel Daughters of the Roman Empire (With Tana Rebellis)
Q: What can you do to avoid being exiled to an island?
Being born into the Julio-Claudian family increases risks of exile; women could be exiled simply due to their familial connections without any actions on their part.
RE-RELEASE: How to Train Your Gladiator
Q: Were there female gladiators?
Yes, while their history is less documented, female gladiators did exist although they often faced discrimination and were sometimes viewed as comic relief.
RE-RELEASE: Women of the Wolf Den: Sex Workers of Pompeii (With Elodie Harper)
Q: Did you have any assumptions about what sex workers' lives were like that changed as you did your research?
What did change for me was just how sex work was absolutely not restricted to sex workers, and the extent to which sexual abuse was endemic to the lives of anyone who didn’t have wealth and power.
