I very much enjoy listening to the excellent interviews and learning about new ideas, new work, and new books about Irish archaeology.
Neil is one of the best hosts I’ve ever heard. His questions are intuitive - most often I have the same ones! - and he’s a respectful listener, good at probing what’s left unsaid. The topics are intriguing, guests are knowledgeable about all aspects of the story they’re telling, and I’m usually left with yet another site to visit or book to read :) Many thanks, Neil & team!
Very accessible discussions of the scientific study of past human activities in Ireland. Learn about the recovery, analysis, and interpretation of tools, personal effects, buildings, and sites, to understand Ireland’s history and cultures. Episodes cover multidisciplinary work of surveying, excavation and data analysis to reveal how people lived in, adapted to, and interacted with the environment in Ireland. The show provides unique insights into Ireland’s past!
I’m an archaeologist who studies 16th century Ireland onwards and am grateful fir this show. The breadth of interest and era is important as so often the medieval period and earlier is explored. Please lend Jackman’s pod an ear if you’re seeking a historically and methodologically orientated series. It’s a great resource to get engaged in Irish archaeology.
Has given me so many ideas for places to visit!

This show focuses on Ireland's archaeology and history, with accessible conversations that bring together field researchers, curators, and researchers to discuss recent findings, methodologies, and site-specific discoveries. Across episodes, listeners get insights into Neolithic ritual practices, medieval landscapes, fortifications, and artifacts, often highlighting how interdisciplinary approaches (like ancient DNA, environmental data, and on-site excavation) reshape our understanding of the past. Noteworthy is the consistently high regard for thoughtful questioning, clear explanations of complex methods, and a strong emphasis on Irish contexts and on-site work that brings sites to life for both specialists and curious non-experts.
