  • Mixed bag

Some of the episodes are fantastic! Others are hard to listen to, even with a PhD. More approachable language would be helpful for a podcast trying to bring climate adaptation to a larger audience.

This last episode North was particularly challenging.

  • Encouraging and engaging!

It’s so easy to be nihilistic when it comes to discussing climate change - sometimes, it seems like we have insurmountable problems to overcome. But this podcast offers a refreshing and timely look at how we can realistically adapt to our circumstances. Thankful for Doug’s work here!

  • Great guests, poor presentation

My biggest complaint is that the conversation flows really unnaturally. The guests are fantastic and I love the range the podcast covers, I really just wish it felt more like conversations with professionals instead of interrogations.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The FOMO Problem: Why Climate Adaptation Still Isn't Scaling with Shalini Vajjhala
Q: Can you give us some background on your experience and what The Pre Collective does?
Pre Collective focuses on early-stage, pre-development work in infrastructure and climate resilience, helping communities and government at multiple levels plan adaptively before putting band-aids on problems, with an emphasis on coordinating vision, capacity, and money.
Climate Adaptation Is Having a Moment—But Are We Ready?
Q: Can you share concrete examples of AI-enabled adaptation startups and what they do?
Satellites on Fire in Argentina uses AI as part of a toolkit for wildfire risk prediction and emergency alerts, and Santa Climate Insurance uses AI and ML to build parametric insurance products for climate risks; both illustrate how AI can support proactive adaptation rather than reactive relief.
Climate Adaptation Is Having a Moment—But Are We Ready?
Q: From your experience, why has adaptation lagged behind mitigation in the investment and policy agenda?
The conversation at COP has centered on net zero and fossil fuel reductions for years, which crowded out adaptation. There's also a mismatch between the urgency of on-the-ground risks and how funding is structured, plus a cultural bias toward binaries—invest in mitigation or adaptation—rather than integrating both. This is changing as new capital, alliances, and governance models emerge, but it will take time to align incentives.
Can Climate Adaptation Prevent Environmental Extremism—or Just Delay It?
Q: How did you approach interviewing people who were involved in radical environmental movements without glamorizing or endorsing their tactics?
I used pseudonyms to protect identities, focused on historical context, and aimed to understand the incentives, beliefs, and strategic calculations driving activists, while clearly separating analysis from endorsement.
Advancing Adaptation with the McKinsey Global Institute
Q: How did you settle on these 20 adaptation measures to analyze?
We tried to pick measures that were relatively commonly used, applicable across different sectors and countries, focusing on those known to be effective.
