Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ep48 Lisa Jacobs finds little joys
Q: How do you use music therapy with a dementia patient?
Jacobs says familiar songs can reach emotional and autobiographical memories. She describes a palliative-care patient who could no longer recognize family members but sang a favorite song with his wife and daughter.
ep48 Lisa Jacobs finds little joys
Q: How does music therapy play into that? Or what do you bring to that and to those people?
Jacobs describes using music to support physical rehabilitation, communication, emotional expression and social interaction. Sessions can include drumming, songwriting, accessible instruments and nonverbal ways to connect.
ep49 Jon Bryant is more at home
Q: How much is fatherhood and this chapter of your life playing into where the album is going?
Bryant wrote Harbor during his wife's pregnancy and finished mixing it on the day their daughter was born. The family spent six months in Nova Scotia, and the album reflects that return home, parenthood, and the changes in their lives.
ep49 Jon Bryant is more at home
Q: How did the first phase of your career open up?
An art-school assignment inspired Bryant to write songs for an album. A friend helped him record it cheaply, and a connection led to Apple Canada featuring a single, which prompted him to tour and build an audience.
ep53 Damhnait Doyle is finally free
Q: What does the curation of the music on your CBC show look like?
Doyle says a five-person committee listens to new songs together and chooses Canadian music for the playlist. The team aims to represent the country's diversity while selecting music that suits the show, and she and her producer can sometimes make substitutions.
