Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 308 Blues On The Chippewa from Durand, Wisconsin
Q: What is one memory that stands out from the blues fest years you've been involved with?
A standout moment was Biscuit Miller and his band sitting in with multiple bars during the festival, creating a spontaneous slow soul train line that perfectly captured the community and spontaneity of the event.
Episode 308 Blues On The Chippewa from Durand, Wisconsin
Q: How do you decide which artists play on which stages, and is there a booking strategy or agency involved?
Booking has grown over the years with a combination of a dedicated committee and personal outreach. We work with a booking lead (Faith O'Willings previously) and consider budget, writers' needs, and stage fit, aiming to pair headliners on the main stage with compelling regional acts on the side stage.
Episode 308 Blues On The Chippewa from Durand, Wisconsin
Q: Can you just talk briefly about how you get one of these started, as far as you know, is there a process with city council or what does that entail?
You start by applying for the 501(c)(3) status and then approach the city council to obtain approval for performing in the park. As the festival grew, you also deal with liquor licensing, insurance, and coordinating with local businesses and vendors to establish the event.
Episode 306 In The Market For Blues fest, Omaha.
Q: So what all goes into starting a festival?
A lot of planning starting several months in advance, coordinating venues, booking bands through a single point of contact, and mobilizing volunteers to manage operations, merch, and logistics.
Episode 304 Johnny Moeller
Q: What's your background and how did you get involved with the Texas Headhunters and the Fabulous Thunderbirds?
Johnny Moeller describes growing up in North Texas, moving to Austin, getting on stage with Clifford Antone at a young age, and how those connections led to joining the Thunderbirds and later the Texas Headhunters, outlining a long arc through the Texas blues scene.
