  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

  • Great show

As someone on the organic microbiology and soil science side, I don’t always agree with them (especially on mono-cropping and other practices endemic of a system far bigger than them) but they’re even, fair, articulate, experienced, and informed guys who keep you up to date, talk shop, and get good guests in different parts of the country experiencing different problems and offering various perspectives. Best agronomy and industry show for my money.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

04 10 26 Farmer Friday
Q: What is the mega grow application rate and timing for sandy soils?
They use two ounces per acre, applying it in the first post-emergence pass with herbicides to act as a crop safener and support root development.
04 06 26 Mailbag
Q: If fields have very low CEC and are going to soybeans, what pre-emergence strategy is best and how much metribuzin can be used safely?
Pre-emergence plans should emphasize metribuzin and valor/authority for burn-down, but a full burn-down with metribuzin alone may not be enough for larger weeds; adding a dicamba mix during burndown can improve efficacy, especially in warm conditions.
04 07 26 Corn Lodging
Q: What is the best approach to scouting and evaluating a suspected lodging field?
Start with a systematic scout to identify the extent of lodging, then monitor stand health, root health, and soil moisture; use three to five days to see if conditions recover after weather events, and revisit seeding rates and weed management in that context.
04 06 26 Mailbag
Q: What should Brett look for on soil tests when pH is in the fives and there is wide variability?
Focus on lime requirement for pH correction, assess base cations and cation exchange capacity, and plan for targeted lime application along with addressing extreme spots; also consider magnesium and potassium balance and the need for micronutrients when zinc and boron are deficient.
04 08 26 Soybean Seed Treatments
Q: What should growers look for when selecting seed treatments this year?
Focus on products with multiple modes of action, understand active ingredients, and consider combining fungicides with biologicals and insecticides to protect emergence, especially in cold soils and high disease pressure.
