  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

07 14 26 Corn Tassel Applications
Q: When is the best time to spray for tassel stage corn?
The consensus is that the VT to R2 window is the sweet spot for corn, with some years warranting pre-tassel applications if disease pressure is early, but generally applying from VT to R2 balances disease protection and yield potential.
07 16 26 Excess Lime in Soil
Q: What is excess lime and what's causing it?
Excess lime is essentially too much calcium in the soil, often expressed as a high calcium carbonate content, that soils can't hold in cation exchange sites, leading to high soil pH and nutrient tie-ups.
07 17 26 Farmer Friday
Q: What can we use to desiccate oats given labeling restrictions?
AIM is labeled but not ideal or highly effective; overall, avoid desiccation if possible due to potential yield/quality risks, and rely on natural senescence when feasible.
07 09 26 Strip-Till
Q: How are you utilizing strip-till on your operation? What kind of benefits do you see from doing that?
Chad explains using strip-till to get ahead of soil problems by soil testing and balancing nutrients upfront, feeding the plant with targeted placements, and using fall strip-till to minimize spring workload while preserving residue and reducing erosion. He emphasizes building the seedbed, balancing zinc and phosphorus, and using a freshener in spring to support planter performance.

Q: What should first-time visitors expect at the Ag PhD Field Day?
