  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

  • Great show

As someone on the organic microbiology and soil science side, I don’t always agree with them (especially on mono-cropping and other practices endemic of a system far bigger than them) but they’re even, fair, articulate, experienced, and informed guys who keep you up to date, talk shop, and get good guests in different parts of the country experiencing different problems and offering various perspectives. Best agronomy and industry show for my money.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

03 18 26 Copper
Q: What are the practical ways to increase copper in soils that are low, and how should farmers test for it?
The best approach is a complete soil test that includes copper and other micros, followed by a plan to raise copper through multiple applications and timing that aligns with crop growth stages; consider using a combination product to deliver copper along with other nutrients to improve uptake.
03 23 26 Corn Fungicides
Q: When should growers start fungicide applications for corn?
Start around V5 with the option to push to VT if disease pressure grows, and consider R3 to R5 as a follow-up if tar spot or southern rust are prevalent.
03 11 26 Ag PhD Mailbag!
Q: What would you suggest to control mare's tail and red river crabgrass in a sandy, non-tilled field with last year's dead grass for cover?
Use a robust herbicide approach, likely including dicamba or a product like Grazon Next with Milestone and 2,4-D; monitor size and residue, apply when weeds are small for best control, and consider a post-emerge pass if premix activity is insufficient.
03 12 26 Live from Ag PhD's Neal Kinsey Seminar
Q: How should molybdenum be applied and tested?
Use soil application in a staged approach or seed inoculation as a test; maximum practical rates are described and the idea is to observe stand and emergence over several years rather than relying on a single soil test.
03 12 26 Live from Ag PhD's Neal Kinsey Seminar
Q: What should be prioritized when nutrient management is tough?
Prioritize nitrogen and phosphorus for growth, then potassium for translocation, with sulfur becoming more important; also focus on soil structure and calcium-magnesium balance to create a better environment for roots and microbiology.
