  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

06 17 26 Scouting for Soybean Gall Midge
Q: What practical steps can a farmer take to monitor for gall midge and decide when to spray?
Farmers should use the soybeangallmidge.org alert system for region-specific updates, combine monitoring with field scouting around end rows, and be prepared for variable responses to insecticides due to timing and population dynamics.
06 17 26 Scouting for Soybean Gall Midge
Q: How long has the Nebraska team been studying soybean gall midge, and what are the main findings so far?
The researchers started in 2018 with extensive work since 2019, conducting 20–30 projects a year, focusing on cultivation methods, variety resistance, and integrated approaches to manage gall midge rather than relying on a single tactic.
06 24 26 Corn Leaf Diseases and Fungicides
Q: What about adjuvants and product longevity in a potentially early season?
Choose adjuvants that are APE/NPE free, and select fungicides with longevity to cover a broader window, especially if an early spray is planned; avoid weak tank mixes that could reduce efficacy.
06 24 26 Corn Leaf Diseases and Fungicides
Q: When is the best time to spray Cobra for white mold risk in beans?
Spray Cobra by first flower or 5-10 days before flowering for best protection, but if weather delays the application, you may consider delaying with a plan for a fungicide follow-up three weeks later in high-risk areas.
06 15 26 Soybean Cyst Nematodes
Q: How important are seed treatments in SCN management?
Seed treatments add an extra layer of protection by suppressing nematode activity around the roots and helping preserve resistance genes, which is especially valuable when using vertical resistance and rotating crops.
