  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

05 19 26 In-Crop Fertilizer Applications - Foliar and Soil
Q: What do you typically advise farmers on foliar and soil applied nutrients?
Start foliar applications early in the season (V3-V5 for corn/soybeans) with attention to potential micronutrients; for in-season, prioritize nitrogen side-dress by V9 and combine with sulfur when needed. Test soils annually, adjust rates based on soil test results, pH, CEC, and expected crop uptake, and consider adjuvants and weather when planning foliar applications.
05 11 26 Early Corn Fungicides
Q: What is the difference between contact and systemic fungicides, and how does that affect timing and efficacy?
Contact fungicides cover the foliage and have limited movement, offering temporary protection, while systemic fungicides move within the plant and can provide post-infection or extended protection; rotation and mode-of-action diversity are important to broaden control.
05 13 26 Controlling Spray Drift
Q: Up first on the show, we've got Katie Savinelli from Syngenta. How are you doing today?
Katie discusses the importance of stewardship with spraying and emphasizes following label directions and considering pollinators when choosing products and timing.
05 14 26 Visual Nutrient Deficiencies in Corn
Q: How do you tell the difference between nitrogen and potassium deficiency when corn is firing on the lower leaves?
Nitrogen deficiency appears first on lower leaves with yellowing starting at the midrib and moving outward, while potassium deficiency starts around leaf edges and often shows yellowing at the margins of the lower leaves.
05 15 26 Farmer Friday
Q: How should you approach potassium and magnesium management when fertility is expensive and not all fields can be built at once?
Consider a staged approach: base the build on grain removal, spread over years if needed, and adjust with attention to ratios (magnesium to potassium) and soil test results to avoid imbalances.
