  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

  • Great show

As someone on the organic microbiology and soil science side, I don’t always agree with them (especially on mono-cropping and other practices endemic of a system far bigger than them) but they’re even, fair, articulate, experienced, and informed guys who keep you up to date, talk shop, and get good guests in different parts of the country experiencing different problems and offering various perspectives. Best agronomy and industry show for my money.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

04 21 26 Field Scouting
Q: What should farmers prioritize when scouting early in the season?
Farmers should prioritize walking fields to assess soil conditions, drainage, weed emergence, disease signals, and nutrient status, then use regular observations to guide timely management actions rather than relying solely on remote sensing.
04 16 26 Soybean Inoculants
Q: How early can I treat soybean inoculants on seed, and is fall application worthwhile?
Treating seeds in the fall is possible but reduces survivability; the best practice is to treat close to planting or just before, with extender materials to keep bacteria alive longer.
04 13 26 Three Pre's in Soybeans
Q: What did you learn from last year's disease pressure and how to plan this year?
The host asks about learning from last year's fungicide and disease pressure, emphasizing proactive planning, booking products ahead of time, and tailoring fungicide timing and rates to expected pressure.
04 14 26 Plant Tissue Analysis
Q: What would you do on a field with relatively high base saturation magnesium levels and a higher pH?
Start by evaluating drainage and consider using sulfur to leach excess magnesium, then address boron and phosphorus needs specifically, while maintaining reasonable calcium levels; avoid overcorrecting too quickly and consider a staged approach based on field variability.
04 15 26 Increasing Protein Levels in Wheat
Q: What are the keys to getting higher protein in wheat in dry environments?
Get nitrogen on before heading, consider early or mid-season applications, and ensure sufficient sulfur and micronutrients to support nutrient use efficiency and disease resistance, while managing costs.
