  • Still farming at 82

All the farmers needed this program 60 years ago when we (wife and I) started farming. There would have been a lot of changes in our farming operation for the better.

  • The Hefty Brothers are fantastic advocates to agriculture

I have been listening to these guys for a few years now. I have seen first hand better results with my crops and yields. It’s always the little things that you don’t think of that make the difference. There’s normally never an episode where I don’t have a light bulb moment and go “yes I forgot about that” or “I wonder if I analyse my data better, will I see something similar to what they are talking about?”.

So glad I found this podcast and listen daily!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

08 03 26 Ag PhD Field Day Review
Q: How do you decide what rate to use for herbicides when weeds are a certain height within label ranges?
Use the label guidance as a starting point, but consider weed size, weather, water volume, and droplet size; in many cases you will opt for higher rates within the allowed range under favorable conditions to ensure effective control and reduce resistance risk.
08 04 26 Insect Control in Lawns
Q: What are the common lawn insects and how should they be addressed safely?
Raymond Cloyd explains a tiered approach: maintain healthy turf through proper fertility and watering, then selectively use insecticides, avoid spraying during flowering, and choose application methods based on whether the target pest is on foliage or in the soil (grubs requiring soil-reaching treatments).
08 06 26 Shelterbelts
Q: What are the top immediate actions to get a shelter belt off to a good start?
Start with affordable, smaller trees, lay down weed barrier fabric to improve initial survival, water regularly (five gallons per tree per week when rainfall is scarce), and keep belts weed-free and monitored for pests and diseases so early health issues don't derail establishment.
07 23 26 How to Fix Saline and Sodic Soils
Q: What is the most effective first step to fix a saline or sodic soil?
Install or improve drain tile to improve drainage and flush salts/sodium downward, then address calcium/magnesium balance and apply sulfur or gypsum as needed.
07 23 26 How to Fix Saline and Sodic Soils
Q: How do you determine if the field has saline or sodic soil?
Run a soil test focusing on base saturation and EC; high sodium on base saturation (around 15% for sodic) or high EC can indicate saline soil, and look for white spots and drainage issues as field indicators.
