  • Excellent analysis!

Starting from their politicization in opposition to the Iraq war & continuing through their total dissatisfaction with the American Left, the two hosts chart out a wonderful & powerful analysis of modern world, geopolitical events that mixes realism, leftism, and other modern day analysis. They play all the bangers, Lenin, Perry Anderson, John Mearsheimer, and others! Definitely worth listening to their stuff & supporting on Patreon

  • Radical realism

Nice clear introduction to realism. I especially like Layne’s emphasis on ideology and Mario’s relating that to the structure of the world system.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ATEOH Interviews: Aaron Good (American Exception)
Q: How has podcasting influenced discussions about deep politics?
Podcasting offers a platform for nuance and alternative perspectives that mainstream media often overlook, though it can also create echo chambers; collaboration and exposure through interviews with diverse figures help broaden understanding.
ATEOH Interviews: Aaron Good (American Exception)
Q: What is the state of academia in relation to radical analysis of political systems?
Academic structures tend to reward conventional narratives and gatekeep funding and publishing, which makes it hard for radical, critical analyses to gain broad traction; podcasting provides an outlet but is uneven in reach and credibility.
Greg Grandin's "America, América": Catholic Traditions and Republican Futures
Q: What's next for you after finishing this book; are there themes or projects you plan to pursue?
The interview hints at continuing exploration of how Latin America can inform a new political imagination in the United States, particularly around democracy, citizenship, and economic democracy, while confronting the limits posed by the global economy and contemporary imperial tendencies.
Greg Grandin's "America, América": Catholic Traditions and Republican Futures
Q: What is the alternative path you see for Latin America and the hemispheric order in a multipolar world?
The discussion suggests looking to Latin America's experiences—its coalitions, social rights, and democratic experiments—as possible models or cautions for a post-empire order, while acknowledging the enduring structural constraints of a world economy that can polarize politics and constrain reform.
Greg Grandin's "America, América": Catholic Traditions and Republican Futures
Q: Could you break down the idea of an immanent critique and what you see Latin America doing in that context?
Latin America serves as a persistent critic of the United States from within the same values framework, challenging US power by exposing how domination and violence have shaped the two regions and how Latin American republicanism can illuminate alternative visions of justice, democracy, and citizenship.
