Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Russell Southwood: An outsider's take on 25 years of Africa's digital story
Q: What is your view on the role of VC and investor narratives in shaping Africa's tech future?
Venture capital has helped illuminate opportunities but can also create oversimplified expectations and push for quick wins. Real progress comes from patient, long-term investment that supports cross-border expansion, realistic metrics of success, and a willingness to fund foundational infrastructure and capability building even when immediate commercial returns are not visible.
Russell Southwood: An outsider's take on 25 years of Africa's digital story
Q: What are some favorite turnkey anecdotes that illustrate Africa's digital transformation?
A key example is M-Pesa, which emerged from a broader ecosystem of time and credit transfers before broad adoption; its rapid scaling demonstrated how practical, on-the-ground needs and trust-based payment systems could redefine financial inclusion and everyday transactions across countries once supported by external funding and local adaptation.
Russell Southwood: An outsider's take on 25 years of Africa's digital story
Q: What stands out to you as the most significant change since you started working in Africa's tech scene?
The shift from a barely connected continent with restricted access to a vibrant, mobile-driven, internet-enabled economy where people could access services, communicate, and participate in markets much more directly and efficiently. This was driven by mobile phones, liberalized markets, and the rollout of affordable connectivity, which opened opportunities that simply did not exist in the 1980s and 1990s.
Seyi Ebenezer of Payaza: Bookkeeping is the new black
Q: What is your vision for a pan-African credit-rating ecosystem?
The guest envisions a central African rating framework, potentially supported by regional bodies like Afrexim and African institutions, to standardize ratings, lower funding costs, and stimulate local capital markets across the continent.
Seyi Ebenezer of Payaza: Bookkeeping is the new black
Q: How did Payaza start, and what was the early product strategy?
Payaza began with an efficiency-driven approach, launching a product called Branches to streamline transaction processing at points of sale, delivering instant settlements, reducing reconciliation issues, and generating profitable, recurring revenue.
