Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Interview with ACM Sir John Allison KCB CBE: A determination to fly - from RAF Cadet to leading Strike Command
Q: What stands out about your time in America and returning to the RAF?
The exchange to Davis-Monthan and flying the Phantom broadened my perspective and demonstrated different training cultures; returning to service, I continued to lead and teach while leveraging international experience, which helped shape my later leadership roles.
An Interview with ACM Sir John Allison KCB CBE: A determination to fly - from RAF Cadet to leading Strike Command
Q: How did you first get into flying and what steered you toward the RAF?
From a young age I was obsessed with airplanes, joined the Air Training Corps, earned a flying scholarship, and used a Cranwell path to join the RAF in 1961, driven by a clear personal ambition rather than family precedent.
AEROSPACE NOTAM - RAeS President 2025-26 Dr Alisdair Wood FRAeS rounds-up his Presidential year
Q: What advice would you give to younger members about becoming ARIAS President and building the right connections?
Follow your passion, get involved with the society to build a strong network, attend events such as lectures and conferences, and be prepared to manage a busy diary while saying no to some opportunities to maintain balance.
AEROSPACE NOTAM - RAeS President 2025-26 Dr Alisdair Wood FRAeS rounds-up his Presidential year
Q: What happened in the past year? What did you set as your presidential focus and themes when you took over? You were around this time last year.
Two themes guided the year: first, people in aerospace, and second, Safety Enables, with safety used as an enabler to develop and promote technology. The year included engaging with air shows, branch visits, and conferences, and promoting collaboration and safety across the sector.
Ballooning passion and air traffic at Farnborough Airshows…an interview with air traffic controller John Baker
Q: Would you talk a little about the role you played as the show progressed over the years?
He describes starting as number two and advancing to number one, the formal letter from the chief controller, and the evolution of duties through multiple air show seasons.
