  • Incredibly useful information that is well presented

I think AWLS will literally save lives with the information they are presenting in this accessible, interesting podcast. I started listening to the podcast after taking the AWLS wilderness first responder course, which is another example of how dedicated, passionate teachers are using the internet to make education more accessible and cost-effective.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Fall That Changed Lucas Hungerford
Q: What safety lessons and psychological considerations does he share for others who ski or participate in risky outdoor activities?
Always wear a helmet and ensure you know who is going off a jump and when, so you can focus on the landing and avoid distractions. He also discusses the potential for PTSD after outdoor injuries, emphasizes taking time to recover physically and mentally, and suggests cautiously returning to sport with a healthy fear rather than avoidance.
The Fall That Changed Lucas Hungerford
Q: What was the hospital and recovery experience like, particularly regarding spleen preservation and mobility?
He did not require spleen removal because the rupture was grade 4; surgery was avoided. He spent four days in ICU, began limited mobility by day seven, and progressed to walking with gradual ramping of activity, remaining hospitalized for about two weeks for close monitoring.
The Fall That Changed Lucas Hungerford
Q: What happened in Austria and what were the injuries and immediate evacuation decisions?
Lucas describes a high-speed fall in a terrain park where he landed on the left side, sustaining six broken ribs, a circumferential collapsed lung, and a grade 4 spleen rupture. Ski Patrol responders arrived quickly, and he was helicoptered out to avoid trauma from sled transport, which could have worsened the spleen injury.
Don’t be Tachy: Arrhythmia in the Wilderness
Q: What happened once you knew it was SVT?
Lily's cardiologist discussed the possibility of doing nothing or using medication but opted for ablation due to her young age and episodes occurring while swimming.
On the Burning Edge: The Medicine of Wildland Firefighting
Q: How do you deal with those non-injury illnesses that they might get?
There are plenty of instances that are not just injuries, such as drownings, cardiac events, and PTSD among firefighters.
