  • Prophet Song author Paul Lynch interview

I have listened to many interviews with Paul Lynch since he won the Man Booker Prize.

The questions asked in the interview on Across the Pond allowed the author to speak more openly regarding his book Prophet Song than in any of his other interviews. The interviewer focused on the most important aspects of the novel as well as the intent of the author in writing it. Very insightful interview!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

140. Geoffrey D. Morrison, "The Coffin of Honey"
Q: So let's talk about one of the characters from Aetna, the spy who keeps a journal and seems to have daddy issues. What can you tell us about him and how that shapes his actions?
The spy is driven by a complex psychology shaped by a strict naval-influenced upbringing and a belief in controlling outcomes. His journaling serves as a paper trail for his handlers, while his obsession with surfing and media manipulation reveals his desire to influence perception more than to achieve tangible results.
139. Ben Fountain, "Rasputin Swims the Potomac"
Q: What drew you to the Rasputin-pro-wrestler concept as a central figure alongside Trump-like leadership?
Fountain discusses how wrestling persona and authenticity intersect, arguing that a manufactured persona can wield genuine influence, and that Rasputin embodies both charisma and a surprising humane potential, allowing him to function as a counterpoint to Trump while still resonating with contemporary political dynamics.
139. Ben Fountain, "Rasputin Swims the Potomac"
Q: So Ben, how did you imagine the weeps and the other uncanny aspects as a potential vulnerability for American politics?
Fountain explains that he let the anxiety, fear, and sadness in the country crystallize into a fantastical phenomenon—the weeping sickness and related events—because it felt like a plausible, amplified expression of real social dynamics, giving the book a spine that reflects the national mood.
135. Angela Flournoy, "The Wilderness"
Q: You mention the restaurant world and the kitchen's pace as a fond favorite part of the book. How did your own restaurant experience influence the novel, and did you do research for those scenes?
I drew from personal experience, including working in a Creole/Cajun restaurant while writing my first novel, and I also spoke with people in the industry to capture the rhythm, decision-making under pressure, and the culture of food and hospitality that grounds the characters' stories.
135. Angela Flournoy, "The Wilderness"
Q: There was a deliberate choice to organize the book with jumps between New York and LA and across years. How did you approach that structure, and did you write it non-linearly from the start?
I did not write it linearly; I imagined a group of friends and thought about how each reader might access the story from whichever character's perspective felt most pressing at the moment, using multiple angles to reveal the same events and to emphasize that different viewpoints shape memory and meaning.
