  • Great Podcast but please boost the audio

I absolutely love this podcast and I’ve been listening to it since my first year of medical school however, the audio level sometimes is so low that Dr. Stanton and his guests are regularly drowned out by ambient noise while I listen to the show in the car. This occurs even when the audio on my car is almost at full volume. Nonetheless, the conversations that I have been able to listen to and perspectives in emergency medicine have been wonderful and I sincerely hope you keep up the great work.

  • Compare wearing a mask to jock itch?

I’ve listened to a few episodes of this podcast. It’s professionally made and typically enjoyable.

I listened to a recent episode between Stanton and another doctor talk about masks. I could not believe that the guest, presumably a respected doctor, compared wearing a mask to jock itch and of course we make people wear pants, we should make them wear a mask! That’s really the viewpoint we’re going to go with as it relates to our civil liberties and forced masking? Where’s the research on the d... more

  • The Best

Not sure when this man sleeps. I can’t keep up with him. But he is right on! He knows how to encourage all of us in health care as we try to provide quality care, despite increasing government regulations and corporate greed from insurance companies.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Poisons from the Convenience Store with Dr. Mimi Lu - Accelerate26
Q: What is Sam's story illustrating in this talk?
Sam's case demonstrates how online AI tools and self-medication can escalate substance use, culminating in a fatal combination of alcohol, kratom, and Xanax, underscoring the need for careful toxicology assessment and supportive care.
Poisons from the Convenience Store with Dr. Mimi Lu - Accelerate26
Q: How should emergency clinicians approach assessment given negative drug screens and the possibility of mixed ingestions?
Maintain high vigilance for arrhythmias, monitor continuously, obtain relevant tests like EKGs, and ask specifically about recent purchases from convenience stores or gas stations to catch nicotine, caffeine, and inhalant exposures.
Poisons from the Convenience Store with Dr. Mimi Lu - Accelerate26
Q: What makes these convenience-store toxins particularly dangerous for teens and why are they trending now?
They are legal, cheap, and easily accessible, and social media dares and influencer culture normalize their use, leading to risky behaviors and delayed, potentially fatal cardiac events that may not show on standard drug screens.
Peds EM Chest Pain, Fevers, Sedation and Readiness Round-up with Dr. Marianne Gausche-Hill
Q: How should fever in special populations be approached, particularly unimmunized children and those with risk factors for KD or fever neutropenia?
Screen according to age and risk, consider prompt workups for KD when clinically suspected, and use shared decision-making with families when deciding on inpatient versus outpatient management, with close follow-up plans.
Peds EM Chest Pain, Fevers, Sedation and Readiness Round-up with Dr. Marianne Gausche-Hill
Q: What are some effective strategies to manage pain and anxiety during pediatric procedures in the ED?
Use a combination of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods, with distraction (screens, age-appropriate content), topical anesthetics, and consider counting to 10 during injections to provide a sense of control and reduce perceived pain.
