  • A must for Ableton users

Been listening to the Ableton Music Producer Podcast by Dan Giffin for the past couple of months, and it’s solid.

He brings on some sick guests, so you’re always picking up new tips and tricks. I’ve taken loads of ideas for my own tracks.

If you’re into producing, give it a go. Quality podcast.

  • Amazing free Ableton tips and inspo!

This show is what we need more of! As a beginning female music producer trying to make it, I appreciate how these conversations are real convos about how people have come up, what inspires them, what their failures are, and some favorite plugins and strategies they have. This is one of the few music making podcasts that’s both technical and philosophical/inspirational. Highly recommend to any producer, seasoned or not!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#203 – Dillon Bastan: Quantum Synthesis, Ableton Packs, and Inspiring Max for Live Devices
Q: Any upcoming projects you're excited about?
There's a plan to expand Iota into a broader, sample-based framework that offers new ways to manipulate and mix samples. Entanglement was a warm-up to a larger VST World project designed to push the boundaries of granular, physical-based sound design.
#203 – Dillon Bastan: Quantum Synthesis, Ableton Packs, and Inspiring Max for Live Devices
Q: How do you see AI affecting music production workflows in the next decade?
AI could act as a local, integrated production assistant—performing automated edits, suggesting harmonic or melodic ideas, and handling tasks with less reliance on cloud services. The aim is to augment creativity without eroding the musician's voice or learning, balancing automation with skill development.
#203 – Dillon Bastan: Quantum Synthesis, Ableton Packs, and Inspiring Max for Live Devices
Q: What inspired the Inspired by Nature pack and how did physics and particle systems influence those devices?
The pack drew on physics concepts from Nature of Code and Daniel Schiffman's work, applying particle systems and simple physics to audio devices. Each device like Tree Tone or Bouncy NotesTranslate physics into interactive, visually engaging sound generators, bridging algorithmic ideas with musical expression.
#203 – Dillon Bastan: Quantum Synthesis, Ableton Packs, and Inspiring Max for Live Devices
Q: Your first plugin, Entanglement, you call it a quantum synth. Could you explain what quantum synthesis means in practical terms?
Quantum synthesis uses wave simulations inspired by quantum mechanics to shape oscillators. The sound evolves as the underlying quantum state evolves, offering dynamic harmonics that aren't tied to a fixed waveform. It's about the sonic evolution over time, rather than a static timbre.
#199 - STVSH: Sound Design, Foley, & Building a Unique Music Identity
Q: What's one feature or tool you wish Ableton or plugins had to help your workflow?
A time-spent indicator per session or per project to quantify how long you've worked, and a simpler, more streamlined approach to mastering and loudness during workflow rather than relying on heavy master chains.
