  • A Must for Law School Applicants

Law school admissions is stressful, complicated, and often times a bit of a mystery. All of this helps fuel speculation online that, while exciting, must be taken with a grain of salt because it is fellow applicants giving their views. Those giving advice often times aren’t a part of the actual admissions process.

This series has truly provided a great view at not only how to better navigate admissions, but how applications may be read (of course, it varies school to school!)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A2Z 111: Personal Statement Q&A
Q: What should not be written about in our personal statements?
Avoid topics that lack relevance to your law school journey and those that do not illustrate professional qualities; prioritize themes that show you as a professional, confident, hardworking candidate and that directly support why you should be admitted.
A2Z 111: Personal Statement Q&A
Q: One says, I have a story when I was a little girl, that's a little personal, can I talk about that?
The adviser emphasizes that personal statements should center on who you are now and how your experiences shape your readiness to be a lawyer; childhood stories can be included but should not be the focus, and the piece should stay authentic and purposeful toward demonstrating your qualifications.
A2Z 112: Addenda
Q: How should an international student handle plans for green cards and future visa/work prospects in addenda or elsewhere in the application?
Explain the intent to pursue a green card or long-term residency only if it directly informs an applicant's future plans and goals; avoid conflating immigration status with the relevance of the legal career and instead focus on goals and capabilities in the personal statement or optional essays.
A2Z 112: Addenda
Q: Would a military applicant benefit from a glossary addendum to translate jargon, or would that be too burdensome for readers?
The host warns against overloading the reader with jargon and advises making the resume readable for civilians; if a glossary is used, keep it concise and ensure it does not require the reviewer to juggle too much back-and-forth between documents.
A2Z 112: Addenda
Q: What about situations like belatedly filing an addendum for misconduct or other important items after submission?
The host advises that it's better to file promptly but if discovered later, contact schools with a concise addendum explaining the new information and its relevance, emphasizing transparency and proactive communication rather than hiding the issue.
