  • Great podcast on recent scientific developments

Great to have a programme where you know the speakers are experts in their fields vs just famous people with opinions. Calmly chaired by Prof. Brian Cox. Highly recommend

  • 5 wonderful stars

I’ve really been enjoying A Question of Science — it’s the perfect mix of curiosity, clarity, and that trademark Brian Cox wonder. I’ve been a fan of his since Wonders of the Solar System, and he’s just as good here: calm, sharp, and able to make the biggest scientific ideas feel close and human. The show feels like sitting in on a chat with a mate who happens to understand the universe.

  • Science from experts with debate and depth

Science Q and A with good questions from the audience and answers from a wide variety of experts. They show how broad each field of science is, talk about the limitations and make unexpected connections. It’s a bit like ‘In Our Time’ crossed with ‘The Infinite Monkey Cage’. Some of the questions are so good that the answers aren’t quite long enough (I think the format could be an hour). Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rethinking sex, artificial wombs and how to up your sperm count
Q: Amanda Benson asked whether advances in ectogenesis could reduce surrogacy or if they would be used mainly by wealthier individuals.
The discussion suggests that while ectogenesis is progressing, surrogacy is unlikely to vanish soon; costs, regulation, and ethical considerations will influence whether artificial wombs become common, with potential implications for accessibility.
Rethinking sex, artificial wombs and how to up your sperm count
Q: Mez Hakim asked what future doctors should know when entering fertility fields and how to ensure healthcare improves for both women and men.
The hosts emphasize the need for mindful practice, academic freedom, and a focus on equality and justice in medical systems, alongside continued funding for research and education to improve patient care.
Rethinking sex, artificial wombs and how to up your sperm count
Q: Anika Burley asked what the future might be like for this technology, particularly regarding bypassing traditional egg retrieval and moral risks of creating a baby from tissue.
The guests acknowledge that while these methods show promise, they still rely on donor eggs in current practice and face low fertilisation success rates; the ethical and regulatory frameworks will determine how and when such techniques are used, with emphasis on balancing medical potential against social implications.
Ancient Egyptian DNA, Cheddar Man and wolves as pets
Q: Ariana Sophia asks if you could speak to just one ancestor from our evolutionary past, who would be the most valuable to hear from and why?
Pontus suggests discussing figures like King Narmer to understand the mechanisms of early dynastic expansion, while also acknowledging the broader value of learning from ancient genomes to illuminate how leadership, conquest, and state formation occurred in ancient Egypt.
What is consciousness?
Q: Could AI achieve consciousness?
While AI might eventually exhibit functions associated with consciousness, attributing true consciousness to AI is controversial and requires a careful understanding of its properties.
