  • Sometimes illuminating, sometimes not

Interesting and illuminating when they are talking about their specialism (or talking to a third specialist). Unfortunately they don’t seem to have any problem in ranging more widely on subjects they aren’t expert in, at which point I might as well listen to my father in law in the pub.

  • Bracing, combative

Not just about finance - much more wide ranging than that. And I am loving the more historical approach.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Turning Point: The Story of ASML
Q: Why did EUV become the turning point for the industry, and why was ASML the company to pull it off?
EUV offered a path to continue shrinking features beyond the capabilities of visible-light lithography; ASML secured the critical collaboration and funding, integrated the necessary multi‑layer mirrors, and built a production-grade supply chain, which allowed the technology to cross from lab concept to mass production.
The Turning Point: The Story of ASML
Q: Can you explain what ASML does and why lithography matters for chipmaking?
ASML makes the most advanced lithography machines used to imprint tiny circuit patterns on silicon wafers, and lithography is central because the size of these features determines chip performance and cost; shrinking them enables more powerful chips and supports Moore's Law.
The Art of the Shred
Q: Was Fred Goodwin the victim of circumstances beyond his control, or were his character flaws significant factors in RBS's collapse?
The discussion delved into both perspectives, acknowledging that while external factors played a role, Goodwin's individual decision-making and corporate culture were critical to the failures.
The Art of the Shred
Q: What did you make of the play about Royal Bank of Scotland?
Ian observed that he didn't learn anything new from it as he had spent years researching RBS, but he appreciated the theme of the ghost of Adam Smith questioning Goodwin's actions.
The Great QE Rip-off
Q: Why was there a significant focus on long-dated bonds despite high prices?
The Bank of England attempted to keep things simple with a quasi-passive buying strategy, inadvertently winding up more exposed to longer compliance and higher risks than necessary.
