  • GOLD DUST

I guess Joe Saward began following F1 around the same time as me (in my case, when Niki Lauda was driving for Ferrari), which means that unlike most F1 journalists and wannabe podcasters these days, he’s actually seen has actually seen the likes of not only Schumacher racing, but Senna (in F3 too) and the great Gilles Villeneuve. That, and the fact that he also happens to be a tremendous journalist, means

he has pockets full of gold dust. Sometimes he generously sprinkles some of said gold dust ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

F1 General | Joe Unplugged | 185 | The Biggest Business Transformation in F1: What Changed Everything?
Q: What's the biggest business challenge in Formula 1 over the last 20 years and why?
The panel agrees the budget cap was the defining hurdle, as it unified teams under a common financial discipline and set the stage for higher asset valuations and more stable investment, while still leaving room for competitive dynamics.
F1 General | Joe Unplugged | 180 | The Monaco Problem: Is the Crown Jewel Broken?
Q: Listener Drew asks, would driving Monaco in reverse make the racing better? Is Monaco broken?
The hosts acknowledge the complexity of Monaco's design and constraints, suggesting that simply reversing the circuit isn't feasible due to safety and infrastructure limits, and that the question opens broader considerations about balancing spectacle with the track's unique character.
F1 General | Joe Unplugged | 177 | Making Sense of F1 History: How Do We Define the Eras?
Q: Heath asks, How do you define different F1 eras? What are the markers that separate one from another?
Joe explains there is no official framework; eras are often defined by changing regulations, driver-centric narratives, or governance, and different frameworks can co-exist.
Race Review | 2026 Miami Grand Prix | 175 | Mercedes Brought Nothing. They Won Anyway. Now What?
Q: Do you think this is a lasting shift in competitiveness or an early-season anomaly?
The consensus is that it's too early to tell; upgrades are uneven across teams, track-specific factors matter, and only after a few more races will we understand if the gap is truly closing.
F1 General | Joe Unplugged | 176 | Why Champions Walk Away: The Nico Rosberg Question
Q: If Nico Rosberg hadn't won in 2016, would he still have retired at the end of the year?
The guest suggests that while the title was a high point, the decision was influenced by the psychological toll and the realization that beating Hamilton repeatedly might not be sustainable, implying retirement could happen regardless of winning.
