神道には教義や経典(教典)はないし、言葉で教えることもなく、何かの教えを信じたから入信できるというものでもありません。祭りも言葉ではなく身体行動がベースとなっています。
言語化することが良い場面もあれば、あえて言語化しないことで大切なものを伝えることができるという視点から、砂漠の文化と森の文化の対比、八百万の神という存在を前に言語化ではなく「感じる」ことを重んじていた歴史などを話す回です。

日本に来た外国人がまず驚くのは、街が美しいこと。
ポイ捨てをしない、ゴミを拾うなど、日本人が当たり前と思っている美意識や習慣はどこから来ているのでしょうか。
神道において神様は清浄を重んじられるがゆえ、掃除をすることは大切なことであり、掃除は自らの心も磨くことに繋がることだと教えられています。
また、細部に神が宿るという認識から、土地や物に対して敬意を払い大切にするという価値観も培われてきたのかもしれません。一日の終わりに掃除をするという学校教育も世界から注目されています。

神社と稲作には深い関係があり、稲作のサイクルに合わせて祭りや行事が行われていると言われています。その年の新穀をお供えして収穫に感謝する11月の新嘗祭や、五穀豊穣を願う2月の祈念祭はその代表的なものです。
今回は、神社のお祭り、稲作と共同体の関係、初穂料という名称の由来、おむすびの名前に込められた「むすひ（産霊）」の意味などついて話し合う回です。
