  • Tenshin Roshi's down to earth style, honesty, and humility has helped me tremendously. Sometimes I think my struggles with Zen practice are weird or dumb, and then Roshi says he dealt with the exact same thing. He also explains the context of the old koans, which helps me work with them a bit more effectively.

  • Disappointing characterization of BLM

I will admit I have only so far listened to Zoom Talk #10 and was completely put off by the host’s weak discussion of BLM and oppression. He immediately started discussing how oppression could happen against AnYoNE, even white people, and it is sooo absurd to oppress another person, (obvious) and that THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO white people were slaves TOO. What a disappointing way to deflect the Black Lives Matter message calling for justice for Black people in the present day, not to mention that ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mud
Q: Could you say some more about greed, anger, and ignorance being virtues?
Roshi elaborates that these emotions can be seen as vast energies and that understanding them can transform one's approach to life rather than simply suppressing them.
Mud
Q: Why do you think Umon ends his statement with the question, "What is the self?"
Roshi explains that it points to the human tendency to define things, which can limit our understanding. The experience of the world is vast and should not be confined to definitions.
Plain Water
Q: Is studying the philosophy of Buddhism needed, or can you just practice?
Studying can be beneficial, but it's important to see how it applies to your life and practice.
Not Knowing
Q: What's the connection between not knowing and intimacy?
Not knowing fosters closeness without gaps, allowing for authentic interactions without judgments or narratives.
Fine Wine
Q: How do we deal with discomfort in our practice?
Go to that discomfort because that's where we grow; if you stick on the comfortable side, then usually we're not extending past.
