  • Excellent teacher

Tenshin Roshi's down to earth style, honesty, and humility has helped me tremendously. Sometimes I think my struggles with Zen practice are weird or dumb, and then Roshi says he dealt with the exact same thing. He also explains the context of the old koans, which helps me work with them a bit more effectively.

  • A Constant

I have been a regular listener for the past 5 years. I come back to this podcast again, and again, and again. It is zen practice, stripped of western knick knacks and romanticism. Listen to this podcast as an enriching addition to your practice.

  • Disappointing characterization of BLM

I will admit I have only so far listened to Zoom Talk #10 and was completely put off by the host’s weak discussion of BLM and oppression. He immediately started discussing how oppression could happen against AnYoNE, even white people, and it is sooo absurd to oppress another person, (obvious) and that THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO white people were slaves TOO. What a disappointing way to deflect the Black Lives Matter message calling for justice for Black people in the present day, not to mention that ... more

  • Deep and real

Deep insight exposed in the form of down to earth dialogue. It does not seem deep but when you hear carefully you realise Tenshin is talking from ‘down there’ and from ‘up there’ (meaning right here) and before you realise he has brought you to his side in a wonderful place of your mind. I am fascinated by what I learned.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Koan but Were Afraid to Ask
Q: What's the difference between a Koan and a Precept?
A Precept is a Koan; it depends on how you take it. Some take the surface of a Precept, but there's a deeper aspect to it, reflecting your understanding and the impacts of your actions.
Reflections of This
Q: How do you differentiate between instinct and intuition?
Instinct is often tied to fight or flight responses, while intuition can arise from deep experience and understanding, giving insight beyond immediate cognition.
Reflections of This
Q: What does intuition mean to you?
Intuition is more visceral than cerebral, an instinctive understanding that arises without deliberate thought.
Technique and Intrinsic
Q: How important do you think it is to set certain goals for myself during the training period?
It's really up to you since one of the basis of Buddhist practices is voluntary restriction, but there are always consequences.
Halloween / Obon / Día de los Muertos
Q: Can you talk about giving away merit during the Oban ceremony?
The act of giving away merit during the ceremony is about collectively benefiting others and recognizes the interconnectedness of all beings.
