  • Excellent podcast!

I’m a scientist myself and love this podcast. Very informative! I need to comment on the Rachel Perry episode where she said (after she mentioned the multiple studies that showed outcomes are improved and patients who exercise!) “we shouldn’t force people to exercise— hopefully, we find an “exercise pill”” Sorry, but that is what’s wrong with our world. We have a country where 90% of adults are metabolically sick. We have an alarmingly high rate of fatty liver disease, and obesity, particularly,... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Leukemia Awareness, Part II: Advances in Treatment
Q: What are FLT3 inhibitors and would you use them?
FLT3 inhibitors target a mutation present in about a third of AML patients. They can be added to chemotherapy or used alone, improving survival in patients with the mutation and is often used as maintenance after transplant to reduce relapse, sometimes in combination with other therapies.
Inside Oncology Nursing
Q: So I'm going to just start it off asking you a little bit about you. And what originally drew you to oncology nursing? Is it something that you intended to pursue from the first day of nursing school?
Nursing became a second career for me; I was drawn to oncology because of a personal family experience with breast cancer and a commitment to being present with patients during some of their hardest moments. I pursued oncology through a combination of clinical practice and a master's program, which eventually led me to leadership and administration in nursing.
Unsung Heroes in Cancer Care: Hospitalists
Q: What defines the collaboration between the outpatient oncologist and the hospitalist, and how is that communication kept seamless?
Outpatient oncologists or their teams routinely visit the patient, and the hospitalist team stays in near-constant contact through phones, secure chat, and in-person checks, ensuring the care plan is aligned and quickly adjusted as needed.
Unsung Heroes in Cancer Care: Hospitalists
Q: You know, some patients wonder why we need a hospitalist. Why can't I be there with them every day if they are in the hospital for cancer care?
The hospitalist provides constant presence on the floor, managing acute issues, coordinating with subspecialists, and ensuring timely decisions, which would be difficult for a single outpatient oncologist to do from the clinic.
How Exercise Really Boosts Cancer Treatment Recovery
Q: How do you counsel someone who is fatigued or new to exercise—how do you motivate them to start moving?
I tailor goals to the patient's daily life and functional needs, framing exercise as practical tasks (like playing with a grandchild) to improve independence and motivation, then gradually build a safe routine.
