Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Arkady Martine: Language
Q: What was the inspiration behind sort of basing so much of the history on poetry?
Poetry in A Memory Called Empire is very much inspired by 11th and 12th century Byzantine poetry cultural significance.
Arkady Martine: Language
Q: Did you write the language? Is there a dictionary of anywhere or a phrase book?
I know several grammatical rules and sound patterns for the Texcalan language, but I am not a true Conlang person.
Arkady Martine: Language
Q: Do worlds inspire stories or do stories inspire worlds for you?
With a theme first approach, I think the world derives from the story, housing the conversation I want to have.
Lyndsey Croal: World building inspired by Scottish Folklore recorded live at Cymera 2025
Q: Lyndsey, you have a new book out, don't you? Can you tell us about Dark Crescent?
It's a collection of dark and seasonal tales inspired by Scottish folklore with a beautiful cover.
Joanne Harris: Smells and Sounds
Q: Do you have one piece of world building advice?
Understand how your characters relate to their world and avoid the Quarry Planet School of Sci-Fi.
