It’s not quite clear what he did to provoke racist abuse… al... more

WORLD CUP ETC - NEWS: Chaos in Mexico Host City Guadalajara after Killing of Cartel Leader
Q: In your estimation, how do you expect the situation to develop over the next days and weeks?

WORLD CUP ETC - NEWS: Chaos in Mexico Host City Guadalajara after Killing of Cartel Leader
Q: Jon, what could all this mean for the World Cup, considering that the intercontinental playoffs are about to take place in Monterey, but also in Guadalajara in only four weeks?
Jon highlights that while the violence is concentrated around Guadalajara, the broader impact is uncertainty and heightened security concerns that could affect travel, venue readiness, and fan safety, though past operations suggest authorities may manage risk if the situation stabilizes quickly.
WORLD CUP ETC - NEWS: Neymar, the Brazil Squad & Possible Retirement
Q: What are your thoughts on his recent public statement?
Paul responds that Neymar's public retirement hints were not entirely surprising given his history of injuries and the patterns in his career, while noting the emotional dimension of such a decision and the potential implications for Brazil and Santos.
WORLD CUP ETC - SPECIAL INTERVIEW: "In Canada, Curling is Bigger than Jesus" - Unpicking the Winter Olympics, with Jules Boykoff
Q: What stood out to you most about the political dynamics at these Games?
The most striking aspect was the way leadership and policy intersected with sport, from the IOC's decisions on symbols and uniforms to the high-profile politicization around leaders and national acts of protest.
WORLD CUP ETC - SPECIAL INTERVIEW: "In Canada, Curling is Bigger than Jesus" - Unpicking the Winter Olympics, with Jules Boykoff
Q: Jules, how do you view the Winter Olympics as part of a broader sports mega-event landscape?
I view it as a major global attention magnet with its own set of quirks, and I think the politics around it are inseparable from the athletic performances and national symbolism that unfold.
