In practice, it fell short for me, and I couldn't quite say why. To my ears, all the emphasis is put on providing an entertaining experience for the audience, and not bringing out the genius in the story. I unsubscribed after getting partway through Johnny Simmons reading "Proxy Marriage" by Maile Meloy. Arthur Miller’s “bulldog“ is a beautiful, poignant and evocative story about his adolescence in 1940s Brooklyn. Jeff Goldblum reads it like a stand-up comedy routine, and the sound mix leans hard into the audience’s almost continuous, uproarious laughter. It’s depressing. It’s the same with Selected Shorts. The producers are afraid that audiences can’t handle literature unless it’s presented as a comedy routine, with actors hamming it up for the audience like a summer camp talent show.
