What's Up With Opera?

Pacific Opera Victoria

As the world reckons with racism and sexism, opera luminaries including director Peter Sellars, bass-baritone Davóne Tines and conductor/soprano Barbara Hannigan dig into what’s changing — and what needs to change — in opera, and why now is the time for evolution and disruption in the centuries-old art form.

  • Opera Reimagined!

I love this series! It is interesting and edgy- just what opera needs these days. It is long past time that "traditional" opera reimagines itself or it will continue to lose its relevance as an art form. For example, why do we still see Carmen portrayed as a love story when it's really about intimate partner murder? Carmen reimagined could be a powerful and current examination of this aspect of today's society. So, Rebecca and guests, keep asking the difficult and challenging questions about ... more

  • Exactly the discourse opera needs!!

This is my new favourite podcast. As a young opera singer myself, I'm so excited to hear these thoughts and conversations about what needs to change in our industry from incredible people who are already working hard on the shift! Rebecca is an incredible host - amazing questions, presence, and curiosity.

  • Top-notch

I've listened to the first two instalments. #1 got the series off to a fantastic start. Both host Rebecca Hass and guest Davóne Tines spoke eloquently, thoughtfully, and engagingly, and managed to dig well below the surface—a perfectly shaped conversation in the perfect length of a podcast. #2 with guest Barbara Hannigan equally met that high bar, while exploring a completely different theme and direction. Rebecca deftly puts her questions into a context for us and then lets her guests tell thei... more

  • What’s Up with Opera

There is a lot up with Rebecca Hass and this new podcast. She knows how to get to the heart of the discussion and bring the relevant topics to the surface. The first episode with Tines is excellent and I am looking forward to the other to come!

  • Pacific Opera Victoria punches above its weight again with new podcast

POV’s Rebecca Hass deftly interviews bright lights of the opera world. First episode with American singer Davóne Tines is a fascinating look at creativity, performance, art, diversity. Tines is an articulate thoughtful artist and he and Hass have a compelling conversation that made me think. Can’t ask for more than that in a podcast. Perfect as well for the opera-curious who may not know the work being done to engage a wider audience with this art form.
