  • Great

Just great! You both make history approachable with language that isn’t stuffy. You make the past relatable.

  • Ugh

The most recent episode (on “Livestock”) was so bad I couldn’t stomach more than five minutes. Maybe the other host would have been better, but why is the dude introducing the topic when he’s so entirely ignorant? On another note, is Eleanor ever going to tone down the excessive AAVE appropriation? She would still be an engaging communicator without it, and it’s so cringey these days.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Medieval Land Mgmt 8: Livestock
Q: What were the major early drivers behind animal domestication?
Domestication began as humans sought reliable food sources and shelter, gradually expanding to other species for milk, labor, and materials; it often started with dogs as companions and progressed to pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, and later horses and camels as essential for larger-scale economies.
Medieval Land Mgmt 9: Famine
Q: You might have already talked about this, but was chicken more of a low status food in post-Norman England?
Chickens were generally a lower-status food, not a showpiece at feasts, with occasional notable preparations, while fish remained a dominant everyday protein and people ate a lot of poultry when other meat was scarce.
Medieval Land Mgmt 9: Famine
Q: is it true that the Inca and similar South American civilizations never independently invented wheels like the rest of the world?
Wheels existed in the sense of toy wheels and some limited concepts, but they were not developed for large-scale transport; heavy carts were not practical due to terrain and lack of suitable draft animals, so wheels were not a pervasive transportation technology.
Medieval Land Mgmt 7: Sailor's Delight
Q: West Bank Robbery asked, how specialized were medieval river vessels for cargo and armies, and how accessible was river travel before steam?
They argue that rivers were the backbone of medieval commerce and warfare; ships and boat design improved to navigate various rivers, with technology like flat-bottomed vessels aiding shallow waters. River travel was faster and more economical for moving goods and troops than overland routes, and cities along major rivers thrived because of this aquatic infrastructure.
Medieval Land Mgmt 7: Sailor's Delight
Q: Oli Cant asked, how did people fish typically? Were techniques different in any way to now?
The hosts explain that core fishing techniques were largely the same for millennia—nets, lines, spears, and weirs—though tools evolved and ponds were engineered for stock. Inland fishing used similar methods, with adaptations to local environments, and early state-level fishing structures like weirs and pond systems show sophisticated knowledge transfer.
