  • Great podcast

This podcast is right up my alley. I love listening to Eleanor on the history hit podcasts and was excited about this one. I found out we’re both from western Washington! Also I’m an slp student and to be fair I have no clue really but there are a few reviews complaining about Luke’s speech and it just seems maybe like a stutter. You guys, some people speak differently and they should still be able to have a podcast.

  • Give it a chance

Found this podcast from Gone Medieval and loved Dr Eleanor from the start. Took a little while to warm up to Luke but honestly, give them a few listens and you’ll come to realize that despite his occasional “umms” and “likes”, and his scripted openings that sound too stilted, he’s actually pretty funny and very intelligent.

Provided you’re an accepting, and probably left-leaning, adult you’ll come to love this show and learn a lot.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

July Mailbag: It's All Greek to Us
Q: Did medieval people think about democracy or republics in the way we do today?
They understood republic concepts in a much narrower sense tied to landholding and male ownership, and modern notions of universal suffrage and broad democratic participation largely did not apply; republican ideas existed but were eclipsed by dynastic and ecclesiastical power structures.
July Mailbag: It's All Greek to Us
Q: Why did Greek remain so influential and relatively unchanged through the medieval period?
Greek held cultural prestige and was tied to imperial governance and scholarship, making it a stable, authoritative language that was preserved in official and scholarly contexts while Latin served broader administrative purposes.
July Mailbag: It's All Greek to Us
Q: What makes Bologna's university different from older cathedral schools?
Bologna's model recruited teachers to teach openly to a growing student body, effectively unionizing instruction and creating an open, diffuse structure that contrasted with enclosed, church-dominated education.
Medieval Sportsball
Q: Were there remedies to a UTI or similar infection, or did you just eventually die from one?
The hosts acknowledge historical remedies and discuss general medieval sanitary practices, noting that some conditions could be serious, but also that modern medicine would handle such infections much more effectively today.
Medieval Land Mgmt 8: Livestock
Q: What were the major early drivers behind animal domestication?
Domestication began as humans sought reliable food sources and shelter, gradually expanding to other species for milk, labor, and materials; it often started with dogs as companions and progressed to pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, and later horses and camels as essential for larger-scale economies.
