  • please hire an editor…

I love the pod! And both of the hosts, despite what some of the mean reviewers say. But the filler words, uhhhs, and awkward silences could so easily be edited out. I know criticizing the way people talk is rude but you’re PODCASTERS for crying out loud. Editing is crucial to making an IRL conversation enjoyable to listen to from the outside.

Between the uhhhs and the obnoxiously loud and weird gambling ads (I’m sure the hosts have little control of their sponsors to be fair) this pod has beco... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Medieval Land Mgmt 7: Sailor's Delight
Q: West Bank Robbery asked, how specialized were medieval river vessels for cargo and armies, and how accessible was river travel before steam?
They argue that rivers were the backbone of medieval commerce and warfare; ships and boat design improved to navigate various rivers, with technology like flat-bottomed vessels aiding shallow waters. River travel was faster and more economical for moving goods and troops than overland routes, and cities along major rivers thrived because of this aquatic infrastructure.
Medieval Land Mgmt 7: Sailor's Delight
Q: Oli Cant asked, how did people fish typically? Were techniques different in any way to now?
The hosts explain that core fishing techniques were largely the same for millennia—nets, lines, spears, and weirs—though tools evolved and ponds were engineered for stock. Inland fishing used similar methods, with adaptations to local environments, and early state-level fishing structures like weirs and pond systems show sophisticated knowledge transfer.
March Mailbag
Q: What is the medieval equivalent of modern celebrity or parasocial relationships?
Saints, popes, and legendary figures occupied the public imagination; people formed intense attachments to religious and literary icons, often driven by religious devotion and cultural narratives rather than contemporary media.
March Mailbag
Q: Did Gilles de Rais really commit the crimes he's accused of, based on contemporary records?
We doubt the certainty of confessions from that era due to torture and political maneuvering; we think he was involved in wrongdoing but the scale (like 140 victims) is likely inflated by later legends and incomplete records.
Medieval Land Management 1
Q: Was confinement just a thing for rich women who didn't have crops to tend in the first place?
There was an understanding that arduous agricultural labor wasn't ideal in the third trimester; bed rest was probably common.
