  • Lovely but too many ads

Emily is as chatty and charming as always. However 25 minutes of adverts for a 40 minute podcast is crazy.

  • One of my favourite podcasts

Discovered this podcast late so now have the luxury of being able to choose the one I fancy. Have listened to about 20 so far and they’ve all been great. Loved the one with Adrian Chiles and of course the one with Frank Skinner.

  • In Love

This podcast has helped me so much with creative angst, I could get back to painting again. Emily is such an incredible, fun and gracious person who has a very radio phonic voice as well. I love listening to those unique conversations with her famous guests on the move, I get a vicarious joy of walking from Emily Dean’s podcast while I am currently stuck indoors under the AC in a desert climate. I am so grateful for this podcast has, my dog listens to it too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Olly Smith (Part One)
Q: What was the turning point in your career away from singing to writing and storytelling?
Olly explains that the shift came from a desire to engage more deeply with theatre and storytelling, aided by his early experiences writing and performing with his brother and the support of his creative family, which led him to TV writing and later novels.
John Robins (Part One)
Q: What did reading Amanda Knox's interview teach you about perspective and resilience?
The guest reflects on choosing to focus on resilience and the option to look outward rather than inward at locked doors, illustrating a mindset shift that influenced his approach to personal hardship and storytelling.
John Robins (Part One)
Q: How did your upbringing and early experiences with alcohol shape who you are today?
Robins describes a pattern of alcohol use beginning in childhood, followed by a long process of recognizing and addressing alcoholism, aided by therapy and sobriety. This introspection informs both his writing and his onstage work, providing a lens for his life choices and relationships.
Sara Barron (Part Two)
Q: What are the challenges of balancing motherhood, dogs, and a creative career?
Motherhood intensified the complexity of care and attention for the dog, which made it harder to balance the demands of parenting with the unpredictability of a freelance creative life; ultimately, managing expectations and seeking healthier arrangements helped align both goals.
Sara Barron (Part Two)
Q: How did the early experiences in New York influence your career trajectory?
Living and performing in New York exposed me to big-city gigs and a demand for sharp, personal storytelling, which shaped my approach to comedy and my willingness to take risks on stage.
