Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

AndersUtrecht Episode 8: Democracy and Social Inclusion - A voice for everyone
Q: What are the current challenges concerning democracy, social inclusion, and transformative change?
The panel emphasizes that liberal democracies struggle to address long-term sustainability, which leads to disengagement and polarization. They also discuss how representation often favors voters over non-voters, marginalizing migrants and other groups, and how this undermines social cohesion. The proposed path forward centers on bottom-up democracy, inclusive policy input from affected communities, and stronger, broader networks that include civil society and local government.
TPV #18: Deep dive: A look into the life and career of William (Bill) Braniff with prof. James Forest
Q: You returned to West Point in 2007 and joined the Combating Terrorism Center as the Director of Practitioner Education. How did that program start and evolve?
The program began as a collaboration with a small group of experts and veterans, evolved into a world-class education initiative with a stable cadre of scholars, and was designed to translate cutting-edge research into practical training for Joint Terrorism Task Forces and other agencies.
TPV #18: Deep dive: A look into the life and career of William (Bill) Braniff with prof. James Forest
Q: After graduating from high school in 1995, you attended West Point. Was terrorism or counterterrorism a topic of discussion in any of the classes you had during that period of time?
Terrorism was not a central topic at West Point at that time because the curriculum focused more on conventional warfare and engineering, which shaped Braniff's path toward learning about terrorism later in his career.
