  • Great pod, but for some reason this audio-only podcast feed has started downloading to my phone as a large video file. Super annoying, please address!

  • Helpful

Good podcast for mountaineering. Just wish there was less content about running and skiing — maybe a separate podcast for that topic ?

  • Great content, but…

Please please please get the hosts better microphones. Compared with the audio quality of nearly any other podcast these days, it’s almost hard go listen to this show. Absolutely love the content but I find myself stopping halfway through a show or sometimes even earlier because the audio is so bad.

  • Essential Listening for Mountain Athletes

Uphill Athlete delivers thoughtful, science-backed insights for anyone serious about mountain sports. The episodes are packed with practical advice, expert interviews, and real-world experience you won’t find anywhere else. A must-listen for trail-runners, mountaineers, climbers, skiers and anyone training for big goals in the mountains.

  • Mix it up

Good podcast and informative episodes. But please mix it up with different guests. Martin is on way too often, and his freeloading ways off other expeditions is cringe worthy. Not a model climber.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Voice of the Mountains: Legacy is Not the Measure with Max King
Q: What would you tell your 22-year-old self when considering burnout and taking a break at Lake Tahoe?
Reset expectations, explore other passions briefly, and recognize that the break can clarify the path forward and prevent burnout, ultimately helping you return to the sport with renewed purpose.
Voice of the Mountains: Legacy is Not the Measure with Max King
Q: What inspired your switch to Kailas and how do you see that brand supporting the sport in the US?
I was drawn to a brand that truly embodies mountain sports and community, with a commitment to developing the sport through youth initiatives and clubs, which aligns with my own work building youth programs.
Voice of the Mountains: Legacy is Not the Measure with Max King
Q: How do you reconcile competing and winning with the broader culture of collaboration in trail running?
I value both aspects; competition motivates me, but collaboration with teammates and fellow runners often yields better experiences and bigger achievements, especially in races like Barkley where teamwork matters.
Voice of the Mountains: Legacy is Not the Measure with Max King
Q: What was your experience like when you first joined college athletics and how did the team environment change your outlook?
College brought a shift from individual competition to structured training and daily team involvement, which helped me enjoy training more and unlocked higher performance through group support.
Training Considerations for Master Athletes with Joe Friel
Q: If a 50-year-old picks up your new edition and can act on only one thing in the next month, what should it be?
Put in more low-intensity training to build a real, big base. This base is the keystone that enables safe progression to higher intensity later and underpins long-term performance and health.
