  • Great pod, but for some reason this audio-only podcast feed has started downloading to my phone as a large video file. Super annoying, please address!

  • Helpful

Good podcast for mountaineering. Just wish there was less content about running and skiing — maybe a separate podcast for that topic ?

  • Great content, but…

Please please please get the hosts better microphones. Compared with the audio quality of nearly any other podcast these days, it’s almost hard go listen to this show. Absolutely love the content but I find myself stopping halfway through a show or sometimes even earlier because the audio is so bad.

  • Mix it up

Good podcast and informative episodes. But please mix it up with different guests. Martin is on way too often, and his freeloading ways off other expeditions is cringe worthy. Not a model climber.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gas Exchange and Altitude Acclimatization with Dr Patrycja Jonetzko
Q: What is the role of hypoxic training and pre-acclimatization for expeditions?
Hypoxic tents or intermittent hypoxic exposure can stimulate erythropoietin and improve red blood cell quality; exercising in hypoxic conditions tends to be more effective than resting exposure, and gradual pre-acclimatization helps the body prepare for high-altitude challenges.
Gas Exchange and Altitude Acclimatization with Dr Patrycja Jonetzko
Q: How does altitude affect diffusion and what strategies help optimize oxygen delivery?
At altitude, reduced atmospheric pressure lowers driving partial pressures; strategies include slow, deep tidal breaths to optimize diffusion, nasal breathing to humidify and warm air, and methods to increase positive end-expiratory pressure to keep alveoli open, improving diffusion efficiency.
Gas Exchange and Altitude Acclimatization with Dr Patrycja Jonetzko
Q: Could you walk us through the journey of an oxygen molecule from the air to the working muscle?
Oxygen diffuses across the alveolar membrane into the blood, binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, and is transported to tissues where it diffuses into mitochondria to fuel ATP production; diffusion efficiency depends on partial pressures, membrane thickness, and the alveolar surface area, with diffusion limits becoming more prominent at altitude.
Supplements: How to Choose Safe and Effective Products
Q: Can you talk about how whey protein affects us as consumers regarding cross-contamination?
Whey protein is commonly taken and has been found to contain high rates of lead and cadmium among other contaminants. Studies have shown that different brands may have varying levels of these harmful substances, making it crucial for consumers to be aware of this issue and choose supplements that are safe and tested for contamination.
Voice of the Mountains: The Poetry of the Long Game with Randy Leavitt
Q: What was your plan A and what is your plan B regarding your climbing and business?
Plan A was to secure financial freedom through real estate to support his climbing ambitions, while Plan B became his passion for climbing.
