  • Great pod, but for some reason this audio-only podcast feed has started downloading to my phone as a large video file. Super annoying, please address!

  • Helpful

Good podcast for mountaineering. Just wish there was less content about running and skiing — maybe a separate podcast for that topic ?

  • Great content, but…

Please please please get the hosts better microphones. Compared with the audio quality of nearly any other podcast these days, it’s almost hard go listen to this show. Absolutely love the content but I find myself stopping halfway through a show or sometimes even earlier because the audio is so bad.

  • Mix it up

Good podcast and informative episodes. But please mix it up with different guests. Martin is on way too often, and his freeloading ways off other expeditions is cringe worthy. Not a model climber.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Making Sense of the Data with Dr. Marco Altini
Q: How should coaches handle discrepancies between how an athlete feels and what the HRV data shows?
Prioritize the athlete's subjective feeling, discuss potential stressors outside training, and avoid reacting to every fluctuation; use HRV as a support tool within a broader training plan rather than a commands-based system.
Making Sense of the Data with Dr. Marco Altini
Q: What is the best time to measure HRV for training decisions?
Ideally in the morning, after sleep if possible, and with consideration of orthostatic position to improve sensitivity to stress; measuring at night can also work but mornings provide a clearer baseline.
Making Sense of the Data with Dr. Marco Altini
Q: Why is HRV considered more of a response to stress than a predictor of performance?
HRV reflects how the nervous system responds to stressors; a low HRV indicates stress, but performance depends on how well the body recovers and adapts, which is why coaching uses HRV as a contextual signal rather than a sole predictor.
Voice of the Mountains: Success is Not the Summit with Peter Metcalf (Director's Cut)
Q: How did you secure funding and keep employees aligned during the Black Diamond transition?
He recounts assembling a coalition of climbers and industry peers, forming a worker-owned-like equity structure, negotiating with banks, and leveraging the community's trust to raise capital. The emphasis is on transparent communication, shared risk, and tying every financial decision to the mission of supporting climbers and the sport.
Voice of the Mountains: Success is Not the Summit with Peter Metcalf (Director's Cut)
Q: What was the turning point that led from climbing to building Black Diamond?
The pivotal period was the Hunter expedition and the subsequent rethink of gear, leadership, and business organization. Peter explains how hardship forged a decision to create a company that would champion climbers' needs, recruit from the climbing community, and build a culture where performance and ethics went hand in hand.
