  • Great pod, but for some reason this audio-only podcast feed has started downloading to my phone as a large video file. Super annoying, please address!

  • Helpful

Good podcast for mountaineering. Just wish there was less content about running and skiing — maybe a separate podcast for that topic ?

  • Great content, but…

Please please please get the hosts better microphones. Compared with the audio quality of nearly any other podcast these days, it’s almost hard go listen to this show. Absolutely love the content but I find myself stopping halfway through a show or sometimes even earlier because the audio is so bad.

  • Essential Listening for Mountain Athletes

Uphill Athlete delivers thoughtful, science-backed insights for anyone serious about mountain sports. The episodes are packed with practical advice, expert interviews, and real-world experience you won’t find anywhere else. • Mix it up

Good podcast and informative episodes. But please mix it up with different guests. Martin is on way too often, and his freeloading ways off other expeditions is cringe worthy. Not a model climber.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Four Inputs that Determine Your Progress
Q: What are athletes asking you about?
Athletes want to know if they're improving and how to interpret their data, including concerns about missed workouts and whether their training is on track.
Voice of the Mountains: My Axe May Be Your Paintbrush with Jimmy Chin (Replay)
Q: What sparked the idea that the mountains could be a canvas for photography and filmmaking as well as climbing?
It started practically when a climbing partner began taking photos, and after selling a photo he shot—despite being a dirtbag climber—the author saw photography as a viable way to capture authentic stories from friends in the mountains, which evolved into a broader commitment to visual storytelling.
Muscular Endurance Training with Uphill Athlete Coaches
Q: What is the recommended progression to start muscular endurance training safely?
Begin with a solid base of strength (zone one and two work) and base stability, then introduce muscular endurance training with gradual progression, ensuring aerobic thresholds are within about 10% of anaerobic thresholds before ramping up ME loads.
Muscular Endurance Training with Uphill Athlete Coaches
Q: What is muscular endurance and how does it differ from local and central fatigue?
Muscular endurance is the capacity to resist fatigue while sustaining repeated, submaximal contractions, with a focus on local muscle performance and efficient recruitment of stabilizers; it sits between pure strength and endurance and is influenced by central factors like oxygen delivery and energy metabolism.
Making Sense of the Data with Dr. Marco Altini
Q: How should coaches handle discrepancies between how an athlete feels and what the HRV data shows?
Prioritize the athlete's subjective feeling, discuss potential stressors outside training, and avoid reacting to every fluctuation; use HRV as a support tool within a broader training plan rather than a commands-based system.
