  • Fantastic podcast

I found this podcast as I was looking for more information on the indigenous people of the US after watching 1883, part of the Yellowstone series. As I’m in the U.K. I didn’t learn about it at school. The podcast has many episodes that cover what I was looking for, but as they are so well researched and detailed I’ve started listening to other ones too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Magnus Hirschfeld, Dora Richter, and the Institute for Sexual Science in Weimar Germany
Q: Can you talk some about the process of sorting out what is meant by different terms and how people are thinking about themselves and their patients?
Language in this history is living and evolving; terms like transgender, queer, and concepts around sex and gender shifted as new science emerged, with Hirschfeld promoting a spectrum view and recognizing many possible combinations beyond binary categories.
Magnus Hirschfeld, Dora Richter, and the Institute for Sexual Science in Weimar Germany
Q: Can you talk some about the sources that you're able to use, the things that you can find out?
The sources were sometimes destroyed, requiring archaeologist-like reconstruction from fragments; a crucial piece was Dora Richter's intake interview found in an archive, plus a long timeline and glossaries that were fact-checked with Hirschfeld Archive experts to ensure accuracy.
Slavery and the Complicated Legacy of George Washington
Q: Can you talk some about what are the various ways he thought about slavery?
Washington's views on slavery were complex and contradictory; he acknowledged the morality issues while actively participating in slavery throughout his life, ultimately freeing some enslaved people in his will.
Slavery and the Complicated Legacy of George Washington
Q: Let me hear a little bit about what got you started on writing this book, writing about Washington and slavery and reactions over time to both?
Dr. Marks explains that his motivation emerged from the 250th anniversary and the summer of 2020, which spurred a reassessment of historical figures tied to slavery. He sought to understand the strong reactions surrounding Washington's legacy.
Black History Month
Q: What should be done to improve Black history education in schools?
There needs to be a focus on making Black history an active, critical inquiry rather than passive learning, encouraging students to engage with their local history.
