  • Behind the scenes

Wonderful podcast that takes us behind the scenes of Afar. The recent episode about a photographer’s assignment in Egypt delves into the trust that must be built before any photos are made. A good mix of travel tips and insights into how magazines are put together.

  • Wrong place to go for ethics advice

AFAR is a partner of the Saudi regime that has a long history of silencing dissent—from murdering journalists to imprisoning Wikipedia editors, denying basic human rights to immigrants, and LGBTQ+ citizens continue to be legally tortured and imprisoned. AFAR needs to get its own house in order and say no to Saudi money before handing out advice on ethics to anyone.

Queer Travel Is About Joy, Not Just Safety
Q: Why did you decide to write a book that's not just a travel memoir but also a guide and advocacy resource?
Danis explains she wanted a resource that truly represented queer travelers' experiences beyond cis gay male encounters, combining personal stories with practical guidance so readers feel seen and prepared.
Feel-Good Friday: The Viral World Cup Food Obsession and a Very American Bourbon
Q: What makes the Florida Caverns dry cavern special and worth visiting?
Alicia Landry explains that the caverns are a living cave with limestone formations that have developed over millions of years, offering a quiet, immersive experience where visitors can hear water dripping and feel a sense of stepping into a different world.
Why the Best New Hotels of 2026 Aren’t All "New"
Q: What makes a hotel qualify as the best beyond just being new and beautiful?
The hotel must have a strong, tangible story that connects to its place, community, and landscape, not just hit list-worthy design; staff vetting and honest reporting are crucial to ensure the experience translates to readers.
Feel-Good Friday: An Ode to Obama, New London Museums, and a Hopeful Ocean Story
Q: What makes the London museum openings noteworthy for visitors this year?
The discussions cover how each museum emphasizes the process of ideas and creativity shaping global culture, with stores and multi-level spaces designed for immersive learning and hands-on experiences.
Feel-Good Friday: An Ode to Obama, New London Museums, and a Hopeful Ocean Story
Q: What exactly is the Obama Presidential Center and why is its location on Chicago's South Side significant?
Lucy explains that the center is designed to be more of a community and civic space than a traditional library, fully digitized to center public access and engagement, with the South Side being integral to the Obamas' story and memories.
