  • Podcast Gold!

Really appreciate what you’re doing, Lee. Thank you, my friend.

I’ve been looking something like this for a long time. I love the entire premise of just being a fly on the wall while you’re talking through your thought process while mixing. Explaining your default moves, hearing your adjustments, even hearing you change your mind.

    More, please!

  • If you mix FoH, this is for you!

With so many podcasts talking about mixing, finally we have one that is actually doing in real time what everyone else is talking about. I really appreciate Lee’s step by step process, allowing listeners to hear sources pre/post processing, hearing the difference in real time as he makes adjustments back and forth. Will be recommending this to everyone.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A - Part 1
Q: Emma Omany asks, what's the best way to make a lead mic sit on top of the mix without harshness?
Focus on mic choice and high-frequency balance at the source, then use gentle high-shelf adjustments and careful de-essing on the vocal chain; avoid overprocessing early and instead sculpt with dynamics and a touch of EQ to preserve clarity.
Q&A - Part 1
Q: Chachaboy asked, how do you create depth without the mix sounding like a brick wall?
Keep dynamics in the mix and use light bus compression with low ratios; then add harmonic content and subtle transformer/tape-like processing to introduce depth without over-squashing, verifying in live PA versus studio playback to ensure it remains musical.
Q&A - Part 1
Q: What are your thoughts on routing kick, snare, toms, and cymbals to dedicated buses for phase coherence?
Time-align groups so that all sources hit the main bus in sync; if delay compensation is missing, manual delay adjustments or external routing with proper compensation can ensure phase coherence across buses.
Q&A - Part 1
Q: How would you EQ and compress snare without the API plugin, just basic console EQ and compressor?
Use stock plugins to recreate the tonal moves: start with a broad EQ to shape, then a compressor with a moderate ratio and fast attack to catch transients; match levels and AB with the API version to hear the differences, and rely on mic choice and tuning before chasing perfect plugin parity.
