  • Disappointing

While there is some important information regarding Ontario wines presented the fart jokes and lack of content focus makes for a poor podcast. Please stick to the topic and research what you’re talking about. I have learned some valuable things about Onatrio wines by listening but please be respectful of guests and their wines.

  • Best Wine Show.

The dynamic between the two hosts is amazing. Both are knowledgeable and opinionated, which is a winning combination. Big bonus that they focus on the wine region I live in (Ontario). I listen to a dozen wine podcasts and this is my favourite.

  • Always entertaining

The guys are always entertaining, even if I don’t always agree with one or both of them on some things. And sometimes their conversations do go sideways (to use the wine term out of context) but I know they’re getting better with every new show. I also appreciate that they showcase Ontario wines and producers as much as they do. Cheers!!

  • More effervescent than a sparkling 2018 VQA

Megalomaniac may have taken the name Sparkling Personality, but I’m pretty sure it’s these guys who defined it. This pure, dry podcast exudes notes of sheer audacity and dappled with suggestions of wry wit and bitter honesty. No other podcast of similar ilk pairs as elegantly with preplanning a visit to the LCBO or getting mildly buzzed on lesser vintages while questioning the quality of the swill that is occupying my glass - does it have hints of Danish pastries? No, after this podcast this che... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The First Wine on Earth: Uncorking Armenia with Diana Khandilyan
Q: How big is this Armenian winery, and where do you source grapes from for this project?
The winery is very small, often a single project with hand-harvested grapes from various places; the owner named Stork is in the UK, and grapes are sourced from different Armenian sites to support a tiny operation.
The First Wine on Earth: Uncorking Armenia with Diana Khandilyan
Q: What are the great varieties in the second wine you brought?
The second wine is a state blend featuring about 40% Arany, 35% Haghtanak, and 25% Milag, with Milag being an ancient grape that was almost lost and then recovered by the project with Vanardy.
The First Wine on Earth: Uncorking Armenia with Diana Khandilyan
Q: What is the grape that the first wine we tried is made from?
The grape is Arini, an indigenous Armenian variety that is thin-skinned, historically tied to the Viadour region, and today grown at high altitudes which influences its spectrum and tannin profile.
The First Wine on Earth: Uncorking Armenia with Diana Khandilyan
Q: So just so we can center ourselves and for our audience who doesn't know, where is Armenia?
Armenia is in the middle of the world on the map, historically part of Silk Road routes, with a long winemaking history beginning around 6,000 years ago, and today it's rebuilding with indigenous varieties like Arini (RNA) and new plantings at various altitudes.
Golf Claps and Nebbiolo: A Playful Dive into Barolo and Barbaresco
Q: What's a good starting point for someone new to Barolo and Barbaresco?
Start with Barolo basics, 100% Nebbiolo, then explore wines by village to understand stylistic differences, and finally branch into single-vineyard examples for the most nuanced expressions.
