Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tax Avoidance and Entity Structuring w. Adrian Bailey
Q: What is Part 4A and how does it apply to structuring and restructuring?
Part 4A is a broad anti-avoidance provision that looks at whether a tax benefit was obtained through a scheme and, crucially, whether the dominant or sole purpose was to obtain that benefit. While many steps can be part of a scheme, the legal focus is on commercial reasons and the timing of actions, with counterfactuals required to show what would have happened otherwise.
The Future of AI w. Brendan Roberts
Q: What should a small accounting firm do first to start using AI agents?
Start with a single tool, train it on your brand and data, connect the right apps, and gradually expand to a composite of agents and tools that can handle tasks like marketing, bookkeeping, and product development.
The Future of AI w. Brendan Roberts
Q: What's the big difference between consumer-grade and business-grade AI tools today?
The hosts discuss the need to choose tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) based on their business orientation, with Claude and Copilot offering stronger enterprise features and security, while ChatGPT remains consumer-focused.
The Future of AI w. Brendan Roberts
Q: How did Brendan get into AI and what is the origin story of Aider?
Brendan describes building Aider in 2017 as a move to make data approachable through conversational interfaces, pivoting during COVID to focus on accountants and small businesses, and ultimately combining that with an advisory platform to help firms work with clients using AI.
Show Us Ya Books - Stone Pine Distillery
Q: What do you reckon? Have we got any guesses?
We think it is alcohol-related based on the excise duty.
