  • Platforming pseudoscientist

I’m so bummed to see that the Resmaa Menakem was interviewed on this podcast whose book and information in trauma are based in pseudoscience and an inaccurate understanding of science topics like epigenetics, which leads to completely inaccurate conclusions about trauma and how to treat it.

  • Excellent story telling

Not only do they tell the story of a woman and her family but also manage to shed light on the city of Detroit in the 1980s

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

You’re OK, I’m Not. Black Men & Therapy
Q: Why is therapy so taboo in the black community, especially amongst black men?
There are outdated beliefs about masculinity that suggest vulnerability is a weakness. Therapy is often viewed as something only weak individuals pursue, rather than a means to health and well-being.
Rest Is Resistance
Q: What role does faith play in understanding the need for rest?
Faith teaches you that you are cared for and that you don’t have to push yourself to the limit, allowing you to tap into necessary knowledge and rest.
Rest Is Resistance
Q: How does one get to that reimagination while also participating in capitalism in order to survive?
You find ways to slow down and create healthy boundaries, taking breaks and listening to what your body needs.
Healing
Q: Can you give any wisdom or thought to that?
Dr. Robin emphasizes that even if tears don't come out, it doesn't mean there isn't internal grief; we also need to attend to our inner emotions.
Live From the D
Q: What do you hope that folks learn about black women, black families, and specifically your loved one, Anita?
I hope that Detroiters will see a piece of themselves reflected in Anita's story and reflect on their own experiences, promoting a deeper understanding of the humanity in Detroit beyond its historical struggles.
