  • Quality conversations and reflections

I enjoy the format of this show which switches between deep dive 30-minute interviews and shorter solo reflective pieces. This format keeps topics and the podcast feeling fresh and relevant.

A recent episode I enjoyed was A Fresh Take on Teacher Conferences, which provides valid insights into an educational Festival. It was inspiring to hear about these type of events which are the future of teacher conferences.

Keep up the brilliant work, Shane.

  • Interesting listen from an educator’s point of view

I really enjoyed the topic as it didn’t just look at school leadership, as many podcasts do. This looked into the parental expectations of schools in China and identified the effect of the changes in demographic Chinese international schools have had to negotiate.

How Schools Can Grow Young Changemakers | A Conversation with Melati Wijsen
Q: What role do teachers play in enabling student-led activism while maintaining academic standards?
Teachers should challenge students, hold them accountable, and offer a balance of supportive guidance with high expectations, enabling learning that connects activism to coursework and real-world outcomes.
How Schools Can Grow Young Changemakers | A Conversation with Melati Wijsen
Q: How can a leader avoid burnout and keep students engaged in long-term change projects?
Provide clear, specific change goals, maintain a strong vision, celebrate small wins, and build a supportive ecosystem with diverse role models to sustain motivation over years.
How Schools Can Grow Young Changemakers | A Conversation with Melati Wijsen
Q: What practical steps can a school take to foster student curiosity without sacrificing academics?
Implement a regular, protected time period (e.g., one hour a week) for students to pursue projects driven by their interests, and ensure leadership supports integration of curiosity into core routines rather than treating it as an extracurricular add-on.
The Danger of Getting Comfortable | A Conversation with Richard Wheadon
Q: What would you advise a leader who is itching to have a wider impact or seek extra challenge?
Don't be afraid to be wrong and seek critical friends who will challenge you, not just applaud you. Use external voices to slow down, listen more, and refine your approach before pushing changes.
The Science of Leading | A Conversation with Meg Lee
Q: What is brittle knowledge and how does it affect leadership decisions?
Brittle knowledge is shallow understanding that tends to break under pressure; leaders must deepen understanding to be flexible and to implement changes that fit their context, giving themselves time to anticipate nuances and objections.
