As is usual with anything recorded from the back of a lecture theatre these are of variable quality, hence the four stars. It is definitely worth listening to Stuart Lee’s excellent contributions. Anyone interested in JRR’s literary influences will get an enormous amount out of these. Unfortunately, Dr. Solopova maintains Tolkien’s tradition of not being the most lively lecturer (who is in their second language?), but in the ‘Talking Tolkien’ episode she is very good.
I’ve only listened to episode one but I’m really loving this so far. It’s probably not for the casual fan, but it’s fantastic if you’re interested in an in-depth analysis of Tolkien’s language use.
Dr Elizabeth sounds like a female version of Stephen Hawkin.
Great subject matter spoilt by the unfortunate voice of a robot.
This is not a course about the Lotr of the Rings series - rather it is a discussion of his academic career and professional/literary interests and work. I found the discussion of his methods for constructing languages and the discussion of the role of medieval mythology in his work expecially interesting.
The audio quality was a bit difficult. I had no trouble understanding (or enjoying) either of the lecturers, but the audio was a bit quiet for my taste.
