  • Background music?

I had to stop a few seconds into the intro. Seriously??? A podcast for autistics with background music while you talk? Not working for me, thank you.

Today’s Autistic Moment does not support the use of functioning labels. If functioning labels are mentioned it is to help educate people as to what they are and why they are harmful. As the owner, producer and host, I can assure you that I don’t support the use of functioning labels.

Comments about being “on the high functioning end,” less than 10 minutes into podcast. I hear this enough in the world. I don’t need it in the community. No one needs it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Maintaining Safe Autistic Queer Spaces
Q: What is it like to maintain this as a safe space, especially during challenging times like Metro Surge?
Coda and Hilary describe proactive operational changes, such as door management for safety, flexible accommodations for sensory needs, and clear communication about welcome and safety to reassure attendees during stressful periods.
Maintaining Safe Autistic Queer Spaces
Q: Please talk about the neurodivergent side of this, because your community is so supportive of us.
Hilary explains that Queermunity intentionally centers neurodiversity in its design and programming, from low lighting and sound considerations to accessibility audits and a diverse steering committee, making the space feel genuinely welcoming for autistic and neurodivergent individuals.
Autistics Finding Themselves
Q: So Lisa, let's give this audience some important information as to what we mean when someone who is going through their stages of grief says they need to find themselves. What does that mean?
Finding yourself means adjusting to a new normal after loss, reestablishing patterns, routines, and coping skills, and often discovering or redefining your identity in the absence of what was lost.
Autistics Building Community & Friendships
Q: How have mindfulness and creative activities helped your self-care and social connections?
Gaby shares that mindfulness activities like yoga and diamond painting helped reduce stress, facilitated relaxation, and helped her form new friendships with peers who participated in the same activities.
Autistics Building Community & Friendships
Q: What was community like before MICC, and how is it different now?
Gaby explains isolation in elementary school, a gradual improvement at the Franklin Center, and how MICC provided a much larger, living-on-campus community with diverse friendships and more opportunities to engage in social activities.
