Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tigers mailbag: Gleyber Torres, Spencer Torkelson, pitching and more
Q: Could Jamiah Jones be a better first baseman than an outfielder?
They consider the possibility that Jones, who has infield experience, could transition to first base if needed, given roster constraints and his skill set, though there are caveats about how much this would affect current plans and whether it's worth pursuing immediately.
Tigers mailbag: Gleyber Torres, Spencer Torkelson, pitching and more
Q: Should we despair about Spencer Torkelson yet?
The hosts acknowledge a long and complex track record for Torkelson, cautioning against overreacting while recognizing persistent signs of struggle. They discuss recent at-bats, speed of adjustments, and potential mechanical changes like a leg kick, while noting there may be multiple possible solutions including lineup adjustments and internal competition for at-bats.
Tigers mailbag: Gleyber Torres, Spencer Torkelson, pitching and more
Q: What level of concern is there with Torres' declining skills both offensively and defensively?
Torres is described as a player whose performance dips when things aren't going well, but the Tigers value his professional approach and defense. The conversation notes his elite defensive metrics in certain areas and suggests that his overall value could still be sustained if he maintains a top-of-order presence and improves plate discipline, while acknowledging the eye-test concerns.
Examining the Ron LeFlore story w/ biographer Adam Henig
Q: What was your approach to interviewing Ron LeFlore and other sources to ensure accuracy and nuance?
I started with Ron, leveraging his willingness to participate while treating the project as a legacy-building endeavor rather than a paid collaboration. I conducted extensive interviews with journalists who covered his era, along with primary sources and archival material, and I cross-checked facts with Ron whenever possible to preserve accuracy and context.
Examining the Ron LeFlore story w/ biographer Adam Henig
Q: Can you give people a brief explainer on how Ron LeFlore came to play in Major League Baseball out of prison?
Ron LeFlore's path began in Detroit with him showing prodigious speed and athletic talent while in prison, where a warden supported recreational leagues. A prison baseball program, combined with a connection through Jimmy Corella and a line to Billy Martin, facilitated a tryout with the Tigers. His speed and potential impressed the organization enough to give him a chance to audition and eventually join the majors.
