Throwing my Sorting Hat in the ring, I think that the memories in Harry Potter Can be explained by a bit of world building in half blood prince. This is just headcanon, but in the The Cave (TM) Dumbledore feels around with his had sensing the magic in the area, saying he is looking for known Magic, the traces of magic are just around him.
