  • Too many live shows

I enjoy your commentary and really enjoy getting g to re-experience the books for the first time through your eyes! I’ve been with you since the Potterless days, but the whole podcast has just become live shows. It’s just not as good as you and a guest one on one discussing the book. Probably fun if you’re there, but just not a great audio experience.

  • Why Debra Messing

Hi Mike! I’ve been listening to you since the early day of potterless and I love watching you fall in love with PJO!

I was just wondering why on a recent pod you called out Debra Messing as someone you don’t like. I know she has showed strong support for the Jewish community over the last few year, is it perhaps that? I am Jewish and just wanted to understand where that comment was coming from. Thanks!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

225 | The House of Hades Ch. 35–36 w/ Ashlee Latimer (LIVE in Atlanta!)
Q: Question two, what would the comic book superhero names for our eight heroes be?
The hosts brainstorm playful, symbolic nicknames that reflect each character's traits and powers, infusing fan-culture humor into the next phase of the discussion.
225 | The House of Hades Ch. 35–36 w/ Ashlee Latimer (LIVE in Atlanta!)
Q: Question one. One of my favorite parts of these Camp Half-Blood books is how grounded the characters are, like Gia. Ah, grounded. Nice. They always feel more human than God.
The discussion affirms that the humanizing details of the demigod characters—flaws, insecurities, and everyday concerns—ground the mythic elements and help readers relate to the larger epic conflicts.
220 | The House of Hades Ch. 22–24 w/ Cara Yap (LIVE in Wellington!)
Q: What makes the Weta Workshop references land so well in a Tartarus setting?
The host highlights how real-world film effects and miniatures enrich the fantasy world, giving texture to the imagined landscapes and monsters while providing relatable production anecdotes for listeners.
220 | The House of Hades Ch. 22–24 w/ Cara Yap (LIVE in Wellington!)
Q: What do you think about Bob's role in Hyperion's defeat?
We discuss how Bob's loyalty and straightforwardness drive the decision, ultimately leading to a hard but necessary action to protect the group, while also exploring the emotional consequence for Bob.
222 | The House of Hades Ch. 27–28 w/ Johnny Frohlichstein (LIVE in Virginia!)
Q: If you had to pick five characters to join you on an improv team, who would you pick and why?
The hosts discuss a dynamic lineup including Grover, Percy, Annabeth, Nico, and Coach Hedge, arguing about how each would contribute to short-form vs. long-form improv and the balance between straight-man energy and chaos.
