  • Great info, unlabeled recycled segments.

Good information, engaging hosts and guests. But in the last couple of months I’ve noticed several shows that have some or all segments recycled from previous episodes. That’s fine but the newer episodes need to be labeled as “repeat” or “encore” or something. Very disappointing.

  • Fabulous Show!

Love this show & I am not even a proficient home repair enthusiast, but I gain a bit of knowledge listening to it. Especially love the “My Old House”, real estate & tip of the week segments. Just a great show!

  • Not just interesting, useful!

I recently discovered the This Old House Radio Hour podcast and thought it might be worth a listen. The current episode included a DIY tip for fixing gaps that develop in floating plank flooring. Brilliant! No more gaps and I didn’t have to spend $$$ on a pro. Interesting is great, helpful is fabulous!

  • A This Old House for the Next Generation

Kudos to This Old House for making this shift into a new media. It’s also refreshing to hear the new voices on the show take the lead. I love the mixture of building science information from Ross and remodeling dad jokes from Zack. Great start and heres to decades more success making our homeownership better.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Clean Smarter, Not Harder + Chris Hayes’ Dream Cabin + Vintage Toilet Showdown
Q: Ellie from Hudson wonders about dark reddish wood on the second floor and how to tone it down without painting.
Panelists discuss whether two different species or finishes are involved; suggest testing a water-based clear coat in a hidden area to tone the color and discuss the limitations and labor involved; warn that staining or opaque refinishing can deepen tones rather than brighten them.
Clean Smarter, Not Harder + Chris Hayes’ Dream Cabin + Vintage Toilet Showdown
Q: Ben from Pittsburgh asks how to assess a newly opened fireplace space and whether to drywall over it or restore it.
Experts advise first to clean out loose masonry, then hire a reputable chimney sweep to scope the inner condition; perform a quick test by lighting a small amount of newspaper in the firebox to gauge draft, and decide on restoration versus drywalling based on the firebox and flu condition.
Bee Problems, Solved + A Secret Speakeasy House Tour + Why Contractors Walk Away
Q: What is the best approach to insulating an old house with asbestos siding without trapping moisture?
Use vapor-open insulation options (fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool, wood fiber) and avoid closed-cell foams to allow drying; if removing siding, insulate cavities or apply rigid exterior insulation and ensure moisture management.
The End of McMansions + Jesse Thorn’s Victorian + Home Theater Secrets
Q: So Kate, how do you think the McMansion era will be remembered 25 years from now?
She notes the era will be remembered through media representations and nostalgia, while emphasizing its role as a distinctly American architectural moment that sparked a tension between abundance and design quality, persisting as a point of reflection rather than a simple verdict.
How to Remove Smoke Smells + Gas Fireplace Safety + Lewis Black’s Basement
Q: How often should gas fireplaces be checked?
It's recommended to service gas fireplaces periodically for safety, and a local fireplace company can help ensure they're functioning properly.
