  • Great guests, hosts leave a lot to be desired

Gosh I was so excited about this podcast. We need something like this for the small sheep dairy world. First episode I listened to was Acorn and Fern and I was hooked! I immediately started to binge old episodes and quickly realized that the new host (Liv) is a great interviewer who lets the guests talk and keeps politics out of the conversation, and the original host (Rachel) just can’t seem to stay in the host seat! She’s so self-referential it’s draining, and the “bunny trails” are insufferab... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S2:E13 Poppy Ridge Farm
Q: What predators have affected your flock and how do you handle them?
They share experiences with black bears, mountain lions, and also vultures; the guest emphasizes guardian dogs and perimeter fencing as key deterrents, along with non-lethal deterrents like dog presence and occasional birdshot deterrents for vultures.
S2:E13 Poppy Ridge Farm
Q: How do you manage grazing and forage to avoid supplements?
She describes intensive rotational grazing on 3-4 acres, with stockpiled forage for most of the year and minimal hay feeding, relying on diverse herbs and high-quality, unsprayed hay to maintain nutrition without heavy grain use.
S2:E13 Poppy Ridge Farm
Q: What breed of sheep do you have and how do they impact your lactation strategy?
Brieanne explains she runs a mix with East Frisian and East Frisian Horned Dorset crosses as primary dairy producers, with Horned Dorset influences helping fertility; she milks on a schedule that aims for one lambing per year and keeps lactation around five months for certain breed blends.
S2: E14 Harmony Heritage Farm
Q: How many sheep do you manage, and what's your milking setup like?
I handle around 30 dairy sheep, milking by hand to about 8-10 milkers regularly, with a past experience using a vacuum-powered machine but preferring hand milking for efficiency and ease of cleaning, especially off-grid.
S2: E14 Harmony Heritage Farm
Q: Can you break down what each of your breeds contributes in terms of udder conformation and milk production?
Breeding isn't strictly by breed but by udder conformation within breeds; crossing fin sheep with East Friesian helps tighten and properly attach udders, while Border Leicester contributes grass-hardiness and overall condition, Redoux Arcot Fin adds vigor, and East Friesian remains the milk production powerhouse, with a focus on maintaining strong lactation and overall durability.
