  • Interesting & informative

I was introduced to this show in November and I’ve binge-listened to over 200 episodes since then. I’ve found tips in the episodes that have improved my photography and my Lightroom already - and the travel stories aren’t helping my wanderlust. I’ve planned about 10 years worth of wildlife travel after hearing some of these podcasts and at some point I am going to have to travel with the Wild Eye crew.

  • Truly inspiring

Gerry giving this podcast has been a huge driving force behind my photography. I haven’t had the honour of photographing wildlife yet but it is my dream to do the Masai Mara river crossings with Gerry and Wild Eye.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#577 - A Wilderness First Aid Legend
Q: What led you to combine paramedic work with guiding, and why pursue wilderness first aid as your niche?
He explains a lifelong drive to impact lives in remote settings, the desire to truly understand the job from a guide's perspective (hence earning guiding qualifications), and the realization that meaningful, scalable training could save more lives than traditional corporate roles.
#577 - A Wilderness First Aid Legend
Q: Can you give us a quick two-minute breakdown of your history and how you got into this field?
He describes starting in firefighting and military medic roles, transitioning to paramedical work, discovering a passion for teaching after a breakthrough moment teaching first aid, and eventually building a specialized wilderness first aid program that blends field experience with formal instruction.
#575 - Unforgettable Patangonia
Q: What gear setup did you settle on for this trip, and why?
A versatile 100-500 zoom was preferred for its balance of reach and mobility during walks, supplemented by lighter lenses; the weather often dictated that the gear be easy to handle in strong winds and quickly adaptable for both stills and landscape shots.
#575 - Unforgettable Patangonia
Q: How do you balance the landscape photography focus with wildlife, particularly with pumas, on a tight schedule?
It comes down to a flexible plan, choosing morning versus afternoon windows, and sometimes shortening or extending viewing blocks to maximize the chance of a good Puma sighting while still capturing dramatic landscapes and light.
#575 - Unforgettable Patangonia
Q: What originally drew you to this Pantanal/Patagonia itinerary, and how did it compare with your expectations?
The appeal lay in experiencing new landscapes and wildlife in a single trip, with an emphasis on the feeling of place and the social aspect of traveling with guests; expectations of seeing numerous pumas were tempered by the reality that they blend into the terrain and require careful, patient viewing rather than quick sightings.
