  • Really helpful

The podcast is geared to relatively less experienced photographers in the sense that Court starts with a review and explaining the basic things then moves on. He is a great “teacher” and the podcasts flow very well. I am relatively new to photography and find his series extremely informative and helpful.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pro Safari Photographer Rich de Gouveia: Low-light Techniques, Best Lenses, "Making" Photographs to Represent Something, and Much More
Q: How do you balance gear choices between primes and zooms when you're in a safari environment with rapidly changing subjects?
Keep a second body with a versatile zoom and a fast prime, and stage shoot planning around expected behavior so you can switch between wide and tight frames as the scene unfolds; the key is being intentional about what you're trying to capture and where the animal is likely to move next.
Pro Safari Photographer Rich de Gouveia: Low-light Techniques, Best Lenses, "Making" Photographs to Represent Something, and Much More
Q: What is the most significant challenge when photographing in low light on safari, and how do you address it with gear and technique?
The main challenge is getting sharp focus and proper exposure in dusk or dawn where subjects move quickly; use fast lenses (2.8 or faster), wider apertures, higher ISO capabilities, and plan for longer exposure times where appropriate with steady support and guide coordination.
Pro Safari Photographer Rich de Gouveia: Low-light Techniques, Best Lenses, "Making" Photographs to Represent Something, and Much More
Q: For someone planning their first African photo safari, what are the golden rules or things to prioritize in itinerary planning?
Start with end goals in mind, plan lodges around desired subjects, ensure a knowledgeable photography-focused guide, and build time into the trip to allow for patient, thoughtful shooting rather than rushing through camps.
One Thing, One Frame: Talking with Jason Edwards on Powerful Storytelling Techniques, Advice on Becoming a Photographer, and Much More
Q: What does storytelling mean to you, and what are some bits of advice for those wanting to harness storytelling better in their own photography?
For me, storytelling is about connecting people with my experiences of the world.
Light, Composition, Moment: Ralph Lee Hopkins, on Building a Life in Photography
Q: When you have like intermediate photographers on a trip, what are some of the lessons and teachings that you might come out of the gates with?
Ralph emphasizes the challenge of getting intermediate photographers to see in a new way and understand how the camera perceives the world.
