  • My favourite podcast right now.

I’m enjoying learning about the role of the social sciences. I studied Sociology at University in the late 80’s. I don’t think that I was ever told what it was really for or encouraged to turn my studies into a career. If only I could do it over! This will have to do. And it will do quite well. Thank you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S10 Ep2: What does it mean to be grown up today? with Bobby Duffy and Carey Oppenheim
Q: Let's discuss what might work. Let's kick off with social media. Should we consider banning social media for school kids at age 16 to address mental health concerns?
The speakers acknowledge potential benefits of reducing exposure while cautioning that bans are not a complete solution; they stress that mental health challenges are multi-faceted, with economic precarity and broader structural changes also driving issues, and call for careful consultation and evidence-based approaches.
S10 Ep2: What does it mean to be grown up today? with Bobby Duffy and Carey Oppenheim
Q: Let's begin, Carey. What's your nodding away? Or what are you thinking?
Carey responds with a synthesis of the data: despite some improvements in education, mental health issues and social harms persist and are amplified by modern factors like digital life, requiring a combination of policy reforms and youth-engaged approaches.
S10 Ep1: 'I’m not psychic, just very lucky!' With Professor Richard Wiseman
Q: What role does humor play in personal and professional life, according to your research?
Humor acts as a bonding mechanism, reduces worry, and serves as misdirection that can ease stress. It helps build connections, expands social networks, and can be a practical tool for leadership and teamwork.
S10 Ep1: 'I’m not psychic, just very lucky!' With Professor Richard Wiseman
Q: How can someone rewire themselves to be more open and flexible, and thus luckier?
Wiseman explains that openness, clear goals with flexible approaches, gratitude practices, and strong social networks help create opportunities. Short interventions like daily gratitude can shift perception and behavior quickly, leading to more positive engagement with others and better outcomes.
S9 Ep7: Investing in the Early Years: Can policy catch up with evidence? with Eleanor Ireland
Q: What would you prioritize with the information you have at hand now?
Prioritize improving early years education and addressing the issues with the workforce, quality of childcare, and structural support for parents.
