  • My favourite podcast right now.

I’m enjoying learning about the role of the social sciences. I studied Sociology at University in the late 80’s. I don’t think that I was ever told what it was really for or encouraged to turn my studies into a career. If only I could do it over! This will have to do. And it will do quite well. Thank you.

S10 Ep7: Whoever holds our data holds the power with Carissa Véliz
Q: What do you see as the core danger of predictions in our society?
Predictions shape decisions and can become self-fulfilling prophecies; when misused they can reinforce inequalities, strip agency, and justify discriminatory practices in jobs, healthcare, and law.
S10 Ep5: AI and the Future of Public Services with Imogen Parker
Q: What safeguards are considered essential when deploying biometrics and other sensitive technologies?
Safeguards include proportionality for serious needs, robust technical performance across diverse populations, legal guardrails, guardrails to prevent discriminatory use, and ongoing public engagement to maintain trust.
S10 Ep5: AI and the Future of Public Services with Imogen Parker
Q: What is the state of public attitudes toward these technologies, and what do people want from them?
Public attitudes show conditional acceptance: support exists where there is a clear public interest and transparency, but there are strong demands for guardrails, accountability, and evidence of what benefits and risks are involved.
S10 Ep5: AI and the Future of Public Services with Imogen Parker
Q: How big a deal is AI potentially for the public sector?
AI is potentially a major driver for transforming public services, with data-driven tools becoming central to policy and service delivery, but its success hinges on governance, trust, and public understanding to avoid hype and ensure legitimate outcomes.
