Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

“Hog Deer Success” - with Ayden & James Doumtsis
Q: Hi guys, I shot a fallow doe yesterday morning on April 5th that turned out to be pregnant. The unborn fawn was fairly small in comparison to fawns inside pregnant does that I've shot before in September slash October. Any insight into what may have happened slash been the reason behind this?
The hosts discuss several plausible explanations, including abnormal breeding timing, first-time pregnancy in a yearling, late-cycle breeding due to nutritional stress, and the possibility of aborted or mummified fetuses. They emphasize variability in fawn size, gestation, and the difficulty of diagnosing the exact cause without a photo of the fetus, while noting that pregnancy timing can shift and there can be out-of-season occurrences.
“Red Roar Wrap Up ” - with James & Nick Doumtsis
Q: What effect does the moon phase have on hunting?
The hosts explain that moon phase has some influence on visibility and activity, but they rely more on wind, temperature, and overall weather; they note that deer can be active or quiet regardless of the moon, and success often comes from planning around daylight activity rather than chasing moon phase alone.
“Red Stag Down!” - with Ayden & James Doumtsis
Q: What gear setup would you recommend for videography in hilly terrain?
They recommend robust tripods (Manfrotto 190X Pro) with a high-quality video head, plus versatile supports like monopod/walk-and-stalk-bar systems for stability and mobility. They highlight the trade-off between weight and stability, advising quality underpinnings to ensure smooth footage even on rough terrain, and they discuss camera handling under pressure and in changing light.
“Red Stag Down!” - with Ayden & James Doumtsis
Q: What tips slash information can you give from a hunter's perspective to help outfitters maximize success during the rut?
The guests emphasize early starts, scouting, wind management, using wind-baffling thermals, and sharing actionable, property-specific intel from farm managers to coach clients on where to focus (scrapes, hind locations, roars). They also stress the importance of planning around wind, pressure, and the number of hunters on a property to avoid crowding and disturbance, while leveraging trail cameras for long-term leads.
“The Rut Is On!” - with Ayden & James Doumtsis
Q: What factors influence whether to hunt fallow versus red deer during rut?
Factors include feed, water availability, deer movement patterns, and the presence of hind groups; the hosts emphasize adapting strategies to current conditions and focusing on areas with reliable water sources and green patches.
