G-League Coach of the Year, Vitor Galvani, on Why Player Development Isn't Linear, G-League Practices, Being Where Your Feet Are and Much More
Q: How did you manage timeouts and in-game adjustments to maximize efficiency given the limited practice window?
Timeouts were used for quick bursts of information; decisions were driven by what the team was executing and body language. Plans A/B/C existed, but the emphasis was on executing plan A better, and only switching if the current plan wasn't working. They relied on pre-planned ATOs and base actions to maintain consistency under pressure.
G-League Coach of the Year, Vitor Galvani, on Why Player Development Isn't Linear, G-League Practices, Being Where Your Feet Are and Much More
Q: Vitor, what constraints did you face in the G-League and how did you adapt your player development to those realities?
The biggest constraint was not being able to go live much, so the emphasis shifted to scripted reps, five-on-five reads built from video, and multiple smaller formats like five-on-one to simulate live reads and decision-making. We built a system around live game reads—reads off ball screens, ball-handlers' setups, and post-pass decisions—while using limited live practice to optimize the learning loop.
Justin Cooper (@j.coophoops) on a Holistic Approach to Player Development, In-Season vs Off-Season Training, The Importance of Environment & More!
Q: How do you balance live play with skill work for youth players to ensure transfer to practices or games?
Keep games fast and micro, layer in variations, and provide quick, teachable moments between repetitions so players explore and learn.
Justin Cooper (@j.coophoops) on a Holistic Approach to Player Development, In-Season vs Off-Season Training, The Importance of Environment & More!
Q: How do you measure progress during the off-season without waiting for the next season to start?
Track drills and game-like actions with film, set up a vision and plan, and use live, constrained, and unguarded reps to monitor improvement.
Justin Cooper (@j.coophoops) on a Holistic Approach to Player Development, In-Season vs Off-Season Training, The Importance of Environment & More!
Q: What is your approach to in-season training and making the most of limited opportunities?
Focus on living in reality, maximizing current roles, and aligning messaging with the head coach to keep players performing well within their current context.
